Samantha, a cheerful freelance journalist, and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast -- only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer, a pompous 1700's Militiaman, a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens and an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.

Critics Consensus

Ghosts could stand to ask more of its characters, but an excellent ensemble and a genial wit make for easy, softly spooky viewing.

Anita Singh Daily Telegraph (UK) It’s an appealing set-up, but after the first episode things go a bit flat. Rated: 3/5 Nov 21, 2022 Full Review Kelly Lawler USA Today A surprisingly chipper comedy about being dead... Sep 30, 2022 Full Review Allison Keene Paste Magazine The charming CBS series is not quite as cozy as the UK’s version, and features a few unfortunate hallmarks of American sitcom formatting that can feel heavy-handed, but when it hits, it really hits. Mar 22, 2022 Full Review Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) The series starts with a solid center because of the work by McIver. It gets better with each of the spirited characters who bring a different kind of humor to each episode. Rated: A Aug 9, 2023 Full Review Christopher Stevens Daily Mail (UK) The subtlety of the original suffers, but this is still a promising comedy for the whole family. Rated: 4/5 Nov 22, 2022 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof It isn't revolutionary and could be a little bolder, but it succeeds as a "happy place," leaving you satisfied. Jennifer S Don't waste your time with the US version. It's absolutely awful. Watch the UK series instead. It's 100% better. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Brailee B A fun show for when I don’t want to watch something super serious. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review S G I had so much fun watching this. We have just one season in France and I can’t wait to see the rest of it. This is my new favorite tv show this early year! The story the characters the suspense it’s a must see go for it !! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/25 Full Review Jay B The concept is silly, but the humor is clever. If you like the British version, you’ll love this one Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/07/25 Full Review Jay W The premise of this show is absolute genius. Our main character Sam, played by Rose McIver, inherits an old mansion from her deceased aunt. The mansion happens to be haunted. The ghosts are none to happy about the new inhabitants. They intervene and give Sam a near death experience. From this accident Sam is given the ability to see and communicate with the deceased spirits. From there, hijinks ensue. The ghosts all come from various time periods. Because of that difference in background they all naturally stand out from each other and interact off of each other in unique and humorous ways. As ghosts, they each have "unfinished business" that Sam tries to help them resolve in order to have them pass over to the great beyond. Although Sam can interact with the ghosts, her husband Jay can not. This likewise leads to some clever and witty results. Jay Sam and all the ghosts are all very funny and likable characters. The creators use the ghost gimmick in a lot of creative ways. Behind the scenes we have a lot of the creative writing/ directing teams behind sit com hits like "Modern Family" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine". They once again bring out their A- Game for this show. The second season of this show improves on everything set up in the first season. The showrunners do a much better job balancing all the various characters. Characters learn and progress from one episode to the next, so it works as both an episodic adventure series and as a serialized overarching story. Make sure to put this show on your bucket list. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Mona R LOVE this show! Never a dull moment. Proud to have three of the actors from Maryland, two of whom went to high school 10 minutes from where we live. I cannot wait for season 4 to begin. :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
