Hart to Hart — Season 1

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Hart to Hart aims for sophisticated wit but lands somewhere closer to sudsy camp, although it's likable enough as a crime-solving procedural with lavish trappings.

John J. O'Connor New York Times The treatment hardly evokes thoughts of Hitchcock, but the husband-wife team could develop the kind of superficial sophistication that brought fame to Nick and Nora Charles in the old Thin Man vehicles starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. Jul 9, 2021 Full Review Sheridan Morley London Evening Standard Wagner and Powers, on the other hand, look as though someone has just sold them a selection of The Thin Man. I hope the Dashiell Hammett estate is getting a royalty. Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Noel Holston Orlando Sentinel Hart to Hart showed signs of developing into a slick, fairly sophisticated detective fantasy... Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers [are] a polished and most appealing pair, Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Creative Loafing The series was airy beyond compare and the plots were generally threadbare as mysteries, but what distinguished the show was the trio of stars. Rated: 3/4 Nov 22, 2021 Full Review Robert Bowden Tampa Bay Times There is something phony about it. When two people in love look at each other, that love flashes between their eyes. When Wagner looks at Miss Powers in intimate closeup, real love is missing. It's "pretend" love and I didn't buy it. Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Bill Mandel San Francisco Examiner It is fun to watch two lovely people do in the bad guy without ever needing to wash, shave or change clothes, and for that reason Hart to Hart seems like perfect fantasy-escapist fare for these escape-able times. Mike P Likeable late 70s/ early 80s cheese; this is essentially a disco-era update of The Thin Man; with its Nick and Nora, the crime fighting detective couple... Except now it's Jonathon and Jennifer Hart, a jet-setting billionaire couple. This was originally the brainchild of novelist and screenwriter Sydney Sheldon... And this whole show was also allegedly part of the settlement for Angelgate... Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood were silent investors for Charlie's Angels; until a source told them Spelling might be mishandling their money... And the whole thing devolved into a court case. So allegedly, Spelling threw this show at Robert, as a way of splitting the difference. The show turned out to be a big hit; and is fondly remembered by Gen x-ers, who would stay home weekend nights and watch.... Stephanie Powers and Robert Wagner were super-sleuthing spouses, globe-trotting to exotic ports of call and solving new crimes week after week. Improbably bumping into murders by accident, week after week... And no one paid them to do all this, and they didn't work for the police or the government. They were just busybodies who enjoyed putting themselves in the line of fire to fight crime. (Improbably). It was a silly concept, but it was fun... Both Wagner and Stephanie Powers are extremely likeable; as is their portmanteau Max; (Lionel Stander), who they have excellent chemistry with... The show won a Golden Globe and two People's Choice awards; got decent enough reviews from the critics and was usually ensconced in the top thirty during its original run. Verdict: Highly recommended, both for camp nostalgia reasons, and also for old school mystery enthusiasts, who still might enjoy this iconic network tv classic...
