Keith Uhlich Slant Magazine Illuminating the human condition even as it denies any morally superior sense of closure. It's televisual cinema par excellence. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2018 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand The season also features “Subway,” a showcase for Braugher that takes place almost entirely in the subway and focuses on the relationship between Braugher’s Det. Pembleton and the dying victim of a gruesome subway platform accident (Vincent D’Onofrio) ... Apr 30, 2025 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters The show evolved relentlessly, sometimes in spurts, sometimes in gradual movements. Audience Member It is noticeable that each successive season of this show moves inexorably towards the more familiar safe-ground of a typical network cop show. The most obvious example being the dumbed-down opening titles with buzz-words like "homicide", "Exhibit A", "Motive" and "Murder". All totally unnecessary, and takes away some of the mystery behind the show. Not only is there an issue with the credits, but also the storylines have moved towards the usual A-B-C concepts more commonly found in soaps - office romances, unhinged characters, corruption in the corridors of power, and the poor handling of familiar characters from earlier seasons that were written out and never seen of again (in this instance Beau Felton) But despite the constant studio interference, the show still sparkles, especially with its character development for the likes of Pembleton, Bayliss, Giardello and Kellerman.
