At fictional Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey, prickly genius Dr. Gregory House tackles health mysteries as would a medical Sherlock Holmes, all the while playing mind games with colleagues that include his best friend, oncologist James Wilson. House, an acerbic infectious disease specialist, solves medical puzzles with the help of a team of young diagnosticians. Flawless instincts and unconventional thinking help earn House great respect, despite his brutal honesty and antisocial tendencies.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

House begins in the clinker and ends on the open road during a sensitively rendered final season that finds the emotional heart of this medical series without sentimentalizing the difficult doctor at its center.

Zack Handlen AV Club "Everybody Dies" is a failure of ambition, a frustratingly slapdash affair that tries to hide its lack of ideas behind the usual forced theatrics, reeking of a fan-fiction-like conviction in its own awesomeness. And it sucked. Hard. Rated: D+ Apr 3, 2020 Full Review John Cloud TIME Magazine The show still offers something you don't find elsewhere on network TV: a mad, sad scientist who almost certainly does not have a heart of gold. Feb 6, 2019 Full Review Ken Tucker Entertainment Weekly House had, in its final seasons, become a rather sentimental show anyway. A fitting ending, in other words. Feb 6, 2019 Full Review CJ Sheu Review Film Review In “The C-Word” (8.19), Wilson opts for chemotherapy, and the way House cares for him is pure bro code masculine humor. When Wilson decides to accept death in “Holding On” (8.21), the way House finds his way to acceptance is very feminine-coded. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Lisa Palmer TV Fanatic Thanks for the enjoyable ride, House. I'll miss your endless sarcastic wit, your perfect stubble and your brutal honesty. Obi-wan K Bruh Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Frans B I stopped watching here in the second episode, simply unbearable ... Confusing, no direction, seems everything just fell apart and nobody knew how to end it. So unfortunate and sad, because it was a good thing. Oh well, wasted a bit of time here, but hey, ship happens. Left this whole season very disappointed Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/22/25 Full Review Geoff J This is both a review of season 8, and a retrospective of the entire series. I did not watch House as it aired from 2004 to 2012, though I was aware of its existence. A decade ago, I binged the entire series. I found its predictable structure to be perfect for lulling me to sleep in the evening, with the occasional laugh. I don't remember much more than that. Maybe a vague memory that the series finale was less than satisfying. Late last year, in a kind of escapist mood, I decided to re-watch all eight seasons. I don't know what to say, other than it's been painful, more than once asking myself 'why am I doing this'. There are a handful of gems among the series' (gasp) 177 episodes. House's Head is a delight. But the writing mostly borders on laughably bad. We seriously need a youtube channel that features house clips edited with a laugh track. The acting? Let's be honest - Laurie carried that show, from the impeccable American accent to believably portraying perhaps the most despicable misanthrope in all of television history. The supporting actors... it's a sea of mediocrity. The roles are poorly-written, and other than Anne Dudek, I can't think of a single case where the actor made something of the weak script. I don't ask that a "light" series like this should be required to adhere to a high standard of medical accuracy. And it doesn't. This is why it's an eye opener to see so many reviewers heralding its accuracy. Just... no... in so many ways. House should have been three, at most four, seasons with 12 episodes each, with an actual character evolution and story arc. Instead, it feels like these were just cranked out joylessly to meet contractual obligation. So, yes, I watched over 300 hours of House and I gave it one star, meaning I can't recommend watching the entire series or even a specific season. I do, however, recommend watching a few of the top-rated individual episodes. I'm still quite puzzled at the very high scores for critic and audience reviews. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Carlos v Good, but the weakest season by far. The producers messed up with the removal of Dr. Cuddy Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Bronco 1 A very shocking way to end the show, I feel like it could've ended better and in a happier way. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Michelle B why isnt this entire series 100%? why arent there good writers like this for tv shows and movies now?
