Season 1 – How I Met Your Mother

      2005 Comedy List
65% 17 Reviews Tomatometer 90% 500+ Ratings Audience Score Ted has fallen in love. It all started when his best friend, Marshall, drops the bombshell that he plans to propose to longtime girlfriend Lily, a kindergarten teacher. Suddenly, Ted realizes that he had better get a move on if he hopes to find true love. Helping him in the quest is Barney, a friend with endless -- often outrageous -- opinions, a penchant for suits and a foolproof way to meet women. When Ted meets Robin, he is sure it's love at first sight, but the affair fizzles into friendship. Voice-over by Bob Saget ("Full House") tells the story through flashbacks. What to Know

      Critics Consensus

How I Met Your Mother begins with a distinctively likable ensemble, intriguing storytelling hook, and an endearingly sweet sensibility right out of the gate -- but the jokes elicit more smiles than laughs and the series' sentimentality may divide more hearts than it conquers.

Jonas V First season is pretty weak. It's not to bad on a first viewing but if you rewatch it it's pretty bad. You already know the characters so everything is a bit boring. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/02/24 Full Review Sunil K outstanding! Loved it really Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/23 Full Review Zack F how i met your mother was hilarious Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review gr. u probably the tv show that I have watched the most often. from funny moments to sad moments, almost all episodes are good. there are some problems with it, like the casual transphobia of the main character or the blatant misogyny of one of the other main characters. but if you can overlook those problems, this show is very good. probably one of the best when it comes to the usages of flashbacks and foreshadowing and temporal storytelling Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review Rachel C I really wanted to like this show after hearing good things about it. I find it weird that Barney's character (especially that he's played by a gay man) is glorified for being a misogynistic womanizer and that's his whole personality. Ted is just kind of whiny and annoying, and there are some ridiculous scenarios that seem like a child came up with like the "cock-a-mouse" episode. Throughout the whole season, I only laughed a handful of times. Maybe it gets better but so far it's looking bleak. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/20/23 Full Review Rhys G "How I Met Your Mother Season 1" isn't the perfect opening season but its great cast and clever writing make it a worthy series starter. Tim Goodman San Francisco Chronicle How I Met Your Mother is one of the fall's standout comedies. Rated: 3/4 Nov 14, 2018 Full Review James Poniewozik TIME Magazine I can't pretend this is anything but a well-executed Friends ripoff. But I'll be there for them anyway. Sep 11, 2018 Full Review Linda Stasi New York Post How I Met Your Mother feels more like a skit in an acting class than the big time. Rated: 2/4 Mar 27, 2018 Full Review Betsy Bozdech DVDJournal.com The group's chemistry rivals that of the "Friends" gang, and the actors play up their characters' quirks ... without making them annoying. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 7, 2022 Full Review Seth Freilich Pajiba I just don't get it. Sure, Neil Patrick Doogie's character was amusing, and the rest of the cast is pretty decent, but it just felt like a weak standard-fare sitcom with punch lines that were either obvious or not that funny. May 25, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Mother pilot has a surprise twist that may ultimately be the show's downfall, but the cast is so immensely likeable, they should be able to overcome any viewer disappointment with sheer charm.
