Amy Gray is a Harvard-educated New York corporate lawyer who, after separating from her husband, finds herself back in her childhood home in Hartford, Conn., living with her nagging mom and daughter while working as a judge for Hartford's family court. Acting on instinct more than protocol, Judge Amy tries to mete out justice while struggling with her new status as a single mother. Amy's mom, Maxine, is a caseworker for the Department of Children and Families. Amy Brenneman and Tyne Daly star in this courtroom drama series.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Judging Amy can't be sentenced too harshly thanks to a standout performance by Tyne Daly, but this series suffers a stiff penalty for its derivative premise and reliance on stock characters.

Michele Greppi New York Post No, it's not [NBC series] Providence. It's even more distressing: a painfully calculated Providence wannabe. Jul 22, 2019 Full Review James Poniewozik TIME Magazine Amy benefits from a strong cast and a slightly harder-nosed attitude than its treacly forebear [NBC's Providence], but if this judge doesn't stop wearing her robe like a security blanket soon, she's going to try our patience. Jul 22, 2019 Full Review Joyce Millman Salon.com Writer-producers John Tinker, Barbara Hall, Bill D'Elia and their intelligence-radiating star have turned out a crisply entertaining drama that's as crammed-full as Amy's docket. Jul 19, 2019 Full Review Lucy Maher Common Sense Media In an era of bawdy, sensationalistic reality shows, Judging Amy gives viewers an hour of solid family drama. Rated: 4/5 Jul 18, 2019 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Thankfully, the show realizes it's sappy. Jul 18, 2019 Full Review Tom Jicha South Florida Sun-Sentinel Judging Amy has enough rough edges, racy storylines and coarse language to turn away the Touched By an Angel crowd. However, it isn't gritty enough to put a dent in the audience for Brenneman's old colleagues at NYPD Blue. Jul 18, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
