Critics Consensus

By focusing on the bureaucracy involved in catching a killer, Manhunt dramatizes a notorious chapter in British crime without exploiting its seedier elements.

John Powers NPR Manhunt is reassuring to watch - and not only because Sutton and company do catch the killer who, I'm happy to say, isn't romanticized or made somehow "colorful." Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Tim Goodman The Hollywood Reporter There's something likably precise in the old-school focus on how much boring paperwork, staff-wide effort and luck goes into piecing together a complex case. Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) Clunes felt right, clutching his flask of coffee and delivering an authentic, contained performance of a decent, unflashy grafter. Rated: 3/5 Jan 15, 2019 Full Review Alison de Souza The Straits Times (Singapore) A refreshingly honest look at the dull-but-necessary legwork that goes into many investigations. Rated: 3/5 Dec 12, 2019 Full Review Joel Keller Decider Manhunt examines its real-life case in a way that won't burn you out and won't bore you to tears. That and Clunes' confident performance will keep you watching. Mar 13, 2019 Full Review Ed Bark Uncle Barky Manhunt's navigations of clues and dead ends at times are enough to keep this pot simmering if not boiling. Nor is there anything wrong with Clunes' lead performance, which unfortunately is in service to a not-so-greater whole. Rated: B- Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Another strong performance from the versatile Martin Clunes, these series focus more on the internal side of resolving crime and dramatise actual cases from the past. Recommended viewing. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review jay h Outstanding Brit crime show. Realistic, based on an actual case. No guns, but plenty of tension and suspense. Highly recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved Manhunt. Martin Clunes is great - do NOT expect Doc Martin in this one, for sure (even though, I think, his wife, Philippa Braithwaite is the executive producer of both). Clearly Mr. Clunes wanted to stretch as an actor and break out of his Doc Martin role - mission accomplished. Very much looking forward to the second season. The plot has been covered in other reviews, so I'll leave it to this: it's a British police procedural (and we've seen soooo many of them) but it brings, I think, some different perspectives and real nuance to it: his humility and even a whiff of doubt, for example, as an aging DI getting his first murder case lead. Showing the plodding, frustrating and very long investigation, the pressures of higher-ups and budgets, the dead ends that every investigation must have. None of the CSI instant DNA evidence - solve the case in a week nonsense. No, this one is closer to what I imagine real police work must be like. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This is my review of the first season, though after seeing the first episode of the second season. I think this is a very good series. This is the type of police procedural that I love. The fact that it is based on actual events is a plus, and possibly why it is so good. There is no need for filler subplots, with unnecessary characters, and the ubiquitous and ever annoying "troubled" or "complicated" teenaged girl character. The acting is good. The cast is made up of, what I would call "fresh faces", because there are very few actors in the cast. That we see all of the time in many British TV and film productions. The directing, and writing are very good, as are the production values. An added plus is that at the end of the first season. There is an update as to what happened to some of the people involved in the case. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best police dramas that really looks at the painstaking process of a murder investigation. Martin Clunes is brilliant as DCI Collin Sutton Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Man hunt is a grounded biopic thriller with great performances and an intense look in to real police work while demomstraighting the toll It can take but that justice can be found and also a scary insight in to the evil deeds that mankind is capable of Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
