As a youth of 15 or 16, Marco Polo first met his father and uncle and embarked on an epic adventure, crossing thousands of miles of unforgiving terrain, through political unrest and upheaval, to the court of Kublai Khan in what is now Beijing. A Netflix original, rife with warfare and political/sexual intrigue, spotlights the years at the Chinese court and the journeys. A global roster of stars includes Italian newcomer Lorenzo Richelmy as Marco. Filming sites are Italy, Kazakhstan and Malaysia; producers couldn't get permission in China.

Critics Consensus

An all-around disappointment, Marco Polo is less entertaining than a round of the game that shares its name.

Emily St. James Vox Marco Polo is a terribly boring character, particularly as played by Lorenzo Richelmy. May 14, 2019 Full Review Liz Shannon Miller IndieWire [Marco Polo] aims to be a grand historical epic, but is too caught up in borrowing from other works to find its own voice. Rated: C+ May 13, 2019 Full Review Brian Moylan Guardian Don't get me wrong, Marco Polo looks sumptuous. It's just that everything that has to do with talking is a fiasco. May 13, 2019 Full Review Randy Dankievitch TV Over Mind It hasn't been a complete wash... but the ten episodes of Marco Polo's first season are a large collection of underdeveloped or overcooked plot points, brought to life by a collection of mostly one-dimensional characters. Feb 28, 2020 Full Review Doug Whelan Irish Independent Marco Polo shows promise for those with a thirst for political machinations with a side of kung fu and a smattering of sex and violence on top. May 14, 2019 Full Review Huw Fullerton Radio Times Yep, it's basically their take on HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, but this new series actually holds up pretty well against the world of Westeros, mainly thanks to the genuinely turbulent period of real history it's based on. james o the series compare to A Song of Ice and Fire. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/25 Full Review Ed W The fact that this series got cancelled is a travesty. It had so much promise. Hated by critics loved by its actual audience Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Julie M Honestly it was refreshing to see a historical TV show in English, that was about an empire outside of European borders. The cast was so good, in every way, every single character was likeable, unlikeable, complex, well crafter, with a good development arch, it reminded me of the complex yet appalling Peaky Blinder family dynamics. I adored getting to know again about the Kublai Khan's rule and the rivalry between the classic Chinese traditions and the united Mongole culture, the rule of Kublai Khan was extremely important in the evolution of the traditional Mongolian nomadic culture, by taking on different regions, religions, customs and evolving from verbal stories to writing them down. It was a pleasure to get to see more of the traditional Mongolian singing, clothes, ways of thinking and else. Honestly, it was a complex, well thought out, with tension and suspense built, visually stunning TV show, with characters for every liking, during an extremely crucial yet small part of history, with an incredible story, What is there not to like ?!?! Like, please. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/30/23 Full Review susan m I dont understand why a few critics deemed this show a flop. I understand that it might not be 100% historically accurate, it's called articistic license. One website actually cited that the actors being virtually unknown as a possible reason for cancellation. Seriously? Ever hear of Michelle Yeoh? Talented cast and I found it highly entertaining. Its too bad it was cancelled Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/23 Full Review james M I get why this was canceled. Some of the plot lines are dumb, and there are some other dumb things about it. But also this was a great show! Production values through the roof. Amazing locations and sets and costumes. Game of Thrones level production values. While the plot has a lot of cheese in it, it also had a lot of great storylines. Many of the secondary plot lines were excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/26/23 Full Review C S I enjoyed watching all shows of the 2 seasons of Marco Polo and the related show, Hundred Eyes. I loved the cast, it was a perfect ensemble of actors. I loved the art direction, the costumes, the cinematography, and the location shoots. I loved the screen writing and story. I could go on. The last show left me wanting more. Much more. Great work!
