William Masters and Virginia Johnson are known as pioneers of the science of human sexuality. Their research shoots them to fame on a trajectory that takes them from humble beginnings in the Midwest to the cover of Time magazine. Masters is a brilliant scientist who is out of touch with his own feelings. Johnson is a divorced mother who is ahead of her time on many fronts, including her determination to have a meaningful career. The pair's relationship isn't just professional, as it evolves into a three-way "marriage" with Masters' wife, Libby. "Masters of Sex" is based on Thomas Maier's book of the same name, which profiled the pair.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Masters of Sex closes the book with a stylish final season that doesn't aim to scale the heights of the series' artistic peak, but satisfies with its thoughtful investigation of its two protagonists' diverging paths.

Scott Timberg Salon.com "Masters of Sex" may never get to the bottom of our questions, but it's back to enjoying itself trying to figure them out. So will viewers, if they can give these star-crossed lovers another chance. Jan 16, 2019 Full Review Alan Sepinwall HitFix With Sheen and Caplan, and the amount of historical material still to cover, I'm hopeful that Masters of Sex can at least be more watchable again, even if it doesn't return to the creative heights of that first season. Sep 12, 2016 Full Review Verne Gay Newsday A lighter touch and a welcome one, too. Rated: B+ Sep 9, 2016 Full Review J.M. Suarez PopMatters Showtime's Masters of Sex is daring, surprising, and often beautiful, owing much to its stellar cast and writers. Rated: 7/10 Aug 30, 2018 Full Review Natalia Marcos El Pais (Spain) A satisfying fourth season. [Full Review in Spanish] Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Lesley Coffin The Young Folks Any opportunity to see more characters significantly expand the Masters of Sex world sounds good to me. I'm planning to keep watching, but the show's definitely been given a warning. Rated: 7.5/10 Sep 14, 2016 Full Review Read all reviews

Dom I think whatever morals you can get from this show is that you are trading one set of evils by being super sexually chaste and making women into nuns and the set of evils belonging to sexual degeneracy and drugs. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review tom m Seasons 3 & 4. Interesting and moderately entertaining. I gather it is a highly fictionalized perspective on the relationship of Masters & Johnson, but who knows. It felt like the last season wasn't really written as a series-ending story … that they were not expecting cancelation of the series. There were a number of storylines left hanging. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review the s This is the season where it dawns on you that it would have been better if the series had ended at the end of season 3. And fortunately we have all be spared the pain of a season 5. The wheels fell off way before this but like a zombie series, it just kept going. The only thing that kept me going was the incredibly talented cast and the caliber of acting. I've been very critical of this series from the beginning but the level of acting is remarkable and that alone makes puttering through the story an option. In fact there is nothing to this series except the cast and level of acting. But as they say, all's well that ends well. The series certainly didn't end well. The introduction of the new therapist couple was a huge drag but ultimately this series is a puffed up soap opera that just keeps chasing its own tail, going nowhere. Wel, with the end of the series...it can chase its tail all it wants while nobody else watches. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It was an extremely moving and touching episode. It so sad it has been cancelled by some bureaucrats Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the Best shows on TV right now!
