Los Angeles in the 1940s is full of glamorous movie stars, powerful studio heads and returning war heroes. But it's also the backdrop to a tug of war between a corrupt police force and a violent criminal network determined to make the city its West Coast home. Detective Joe Teague, an ex-Marine who plays his cards close to his chest, gets caught in the middle of that war during his assignment to the new Organized Crime Division. It's headed by Detective Hal Morrison, who becomes suspicious after learning Teague is asked to help blackmail a high-powered mobster. However, police Capt. William Parker sees the scheme as a perfect opportunity to bring down infamous gangsters like Ben "Bugsy" Siegel and Mickey Cohen, and he looks to Teague for key information in the LAPD's crusade against organized crime. "Mob City" is based on John Buntin's critically acclaimed book "L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America's Most Seductive City" and is executive produced by Frank Darabont.

Critics Consensus

Frank Darabont's love letter to classic noir, Mob City sometimes feels a bit too familiar, but it's stunning to look at.

David Martindale Fort Worth Star-Telegram/DFW.com Frank Darabont has done something extraordinary. Dec 13, 2013 Full Review Neal Justin Minneapolis Star Tribune Creator Frank Darabont... once again has created an authentic mood, shooting almost every scene at night with puddle-filled streets, flashing neon lights and ambiguous characters that can't be trusted. Dec 6, 2013 Full Review Hank Stuever Washington Post The guns here are the kind that go "ho-hum" instead of "bang-bang." Dec 6, 2013 Full Review Mark Dawidziak Cleveland Plain Dealer Frank Darabont's Mob City is the higher-caliber contender in Hollywood's current crime wave. It's better paced, better written and better structured. Dec 9, 2013 Full Review Andy Greenwald Grantland No flesh is devoured in Mob City, but there's a touch of zombie to the show nonetheless - its appearance is instantly recognizable, but no evident humanity lurks underneath. Dec 9, 2013 Full Review Billy Nilles Zap2it.com By hewing closely to the tradition of noir, the series passes over any sort of opportunity for a subversion of expectations. Leo V One of the best shows I've ever seen, Frank Darabont wrote a masterpiece of a Pilot once again, I highly recommend for anyone who likes Noir-Crime shows. The way it's shot it's just perfect Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/12/24 Full Review Audience Member It's obviously gonna be fresh because it's created by Frank Darabont, he directs four episodes, writes three, and two were by himself. But with an outstanding pilot, the rest of the series is disappointing. The only other episode I loved was the third because of the last about 10-15 minutes. I did episode reviews at dewlover420.wordpress.com Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Was slow at first and way too PG-13...warmed up to it episode by episode.Bugsey Siegel getting shot to shit was definitely the highlight of the "entire 6 episodes".A good watch overall... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This show had the look, the sets and the costumes but just not the heart. I didn't care about the characters. They all seem so disinterested in what is going on themselves that it really is hard to be interested on their behalf. I guess the director was going for a 'gutsy aloof' but all I saw was a city that looked liked they'd overdosed on tranquilisers. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Great cast, Knepper especially knocked it out of the park. Isn't the greatest mob story I've seen but it was entertaining, plus I love Noir. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Quality piece of work. Mini series, three two hour movies. Perfectly cast and scripted. Terrific performances, great action, set in LA just after the second world war...film noir. Very Raymond Chandler...it was a dark and stormy night when she walked into the room..must see! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
