What to Know

Critics Consensus

Well-tailored to the effervescent Brandy's charm, Moesha has plenty of growing pains to work through as a show but benefits from a solid core of wholesomeness.

Esther Iverem Washington Post The writers manage to approximate the way that people actually speak. Moesha is not marred by the embarrassing racial assumptions, cliches and gestures that make other sitcoms parodies of themselves. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Howard Rosenberg Los Angeles Times Much of it is pretty silly stuff, but maybe the younger crowd will be more appreciative. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Storm Philadelphia Inquirer It has no more regard for many of its young characters -- and viewers -- than the cheapest TV comedies. That's a double shame because the show does no justice to the obvious justice to the obvious energy, talent and appeal of its star. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly Exists in a world of teenage girlhood recognizable to almost anyone while never denying its components. No wonder Brandy's so normal. I wish there'd been a Moesha on TV when I was 15 and needed her. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Robin Dougherty Miami Herald Television is a medium that cannibalizes itself, so it should come as no surprise that the Great Box has swallowed up Brandy and spit her back out as Moesha, a cloying hybrid of Blossom, Patty Duke and Vanessa Huxtable. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Chris Kaltenbach Baltimore Sun Cute, if you like cute, and pretty enjoyable. Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Jesse N "Moesha" was a pretty popular sitcom that aired in the '90s and early 2000s, and it definitely holds a nostalgic spot for a lot of people who grew up watching it. The show revolved around Moesha Mitchell, a teenager navigating high school, family, and friendships in Los Angeles. One of the things that stood out about "Moesha" was that it centered on a young Black woman's experiences, which was significant for representation on television at the time. It tackled relatable issues for teenagers, like first crushes, school drama, and figuring out who you are, but it also touched on more serious topics like family dynamics, social issues, and personal growth. Brandy Norwood, who played Moesha, was really the heart of the show, and her character was often portrayed as smart, independent, and trying to do the right thing, even if she sometimes made mistakes. The supporting cast, including her father Frank (William Allen Young), her stepmother Dee (Sheryl Lee Ralph), and her friends Niecy (Shar Jackson) and Kim (Countess Vaughn), also brought a lot of humor and different perspectives to the storylines. The show had a good run and is remembered for its catchy theme song, its fashion (very '90s!), and its portrayal of a close-knit community. While some of the later seasons might not have been as strong in the eyes of all fans, overall, "Moesha" is often looked back on fondly as a significant show in its era.
