Mystery writer and amateur detective Jessica Fletcher - a down-to-earth, middle-aged widow - ferrets out the criminals in idyllic Cabot Cove, Maine, which apparently is the murder capital of the United States for the show's 12-season run. Though while traveling, she uncovers a fair number of killers as well.

Audience Member This was my Mom and I's show back in the day, and the last one I'd get to watch before bedtime most Sunday nights. But, it gave me nightmares. Episode 3 "Murder, She Spoke" from this season scared the pants off me, and I never forgot the infrared murder of music studio boss Randy Withworth. After I told my Mom, "I see red and Randy being stabbed to death when I close my eyes!" my Mom "Maybe you shouldn't watch these anymore?" which I "Who will employ Jessica Fletcher if she can't continue to celebrate murderers through her creative work?"...? ...Not really. I wasn't quite aware of my nighttime dose of bloodlust at the time. I'm sure everyone is aware now...?
