This often campy series centers on the office of Dr. Sean McNamara and Dr. Christian Troy, longtime friends who practice surgery (and live life) in two entirely different ways. Christian is the stereotypical self-destructive playboy. Sean is the family man facing a moral crossroads, as well as a failed marriage to Julia. Sounds grim, but a healthy dose of dark humor keeps things humming and contributes to the show's appeal with both viewers and critics. But be warned -- the depictions of surgery on this series are a tad graphic.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Nip/Tuck is a slick melodrama that cuts deep when it mines the pathos of its vivid ensemble, but the series' calling card grotesquerie and gaudy symbolism can be more of a hindrance than a boon.

Joe Reid The Atlantic A lot of scenes of the two main characters speaking in very blunt terms about the themes of the show (DID YOU KNOW AMERICANS ARE OBSESSED WITH UNACHIEVABLE BEAUTY IDEALS?). Nov 13, 2018 Full Review Diane Werts Newsday Murphy's concept in its basics is already beautiful. But he pushes the show to be a breathtaking knockout. Like some plastic surgery patients, Nip/Tuck initially gets such a pleasing result that it doesn't seem to know when to stop. Nov 13, 2018 Full Review Linda Stasi New York Post What's good here is the acting, and some of the story lines. But they are overshadowed by over-the-top gory surgeries and preposterous situations. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 13, 2018 Full Review Terry Kelleher People Magazine McMahon is perfect as a satyr with a seductive smile... Walsh fares well in the difficult role of a man who swings back and forth between self-righteousness and complete moral confusion. Nov 13, 2018 Full Review David Zurawik Baltimore Sun I like the way this series cuts to the moral bone and ties so much of the evil men and women do to our culture's excessive materialism, commercialism and obsession with appearances. Nov 13, 2018 Full Review Joyce Millman Boston Phoenix Nip/Tuck is put together with wit, style and unexpected flashes of wisdom and heart between the acrobatic sex (hey, can they do this stuff on basic cable?) and glossy, grisly operating-room scenes. Gypsy L Raw, bold and genius. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Bruno V Série histórica com peso de ensinar a questão da obsessão da vaidade pela beleza e poder. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/23 Full Review Audience Member This show does not hold back one bit. The writing, acting, and directing for this show are hard to match. Every season has a refreshing new feeling, yet the show stays entertaining until the last episode. If you can handle the intensity, you will not be let down by Nip/Tuck. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Ryan Murphy's first FX series is basically a showy, sexed-up and over-the-top soap opera, but it's also rather brilliant at parts. It's an uncomfortable medical drama with plenty of good humor, and a interesting characters and scripts makes the show constantly interesting. Lot of shock-value too (no arguing that), but it's exactly the same type of mass-appeal Chuck Palahniuk has. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
