Norm Henderson is a former professional hockey player who has been banned from the league because of gambling and tax evasion costs. In order to avoid spending time in jail, Norm agrees to do five years of community service as a social worker. The problem is he was not properly trained (other than how to operate the coffee machine). Helping Norm is Laurie, previously his personal social worker who is now his co-worker and best friend. Taylor, Norm's first client and a former prostitute, credits Norm with turning her life around and ends up working in the office.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Breezy to a fault, Norm MacDonald's wry variety of comedy finds mixed success in the sitcom format, scoring some offbeat laughs without gelling into a consistently fun farce.

Michele Greppi New York Post Metcalf's energy just comes across as desperation when she's working with a man who has no inflection, no expression, and no moves and brings nothing to would-be comedy except dead weight. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Tom Shales Washington Post It isn't great, but it certainly is consistent with the laconic personality of its dry-witted star. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Joel Stein TIME Magazine Even though Norm Macdonald was funny on Saturday Night Live and is great when guesting on Howard Stern or David Letterman, it turns out the guy isn't always so entertaining. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Inappropriateness aside, The Norm Show brings a new comedic voice to prime time. Macdonald's voice may not be to everyone's liking, but it's at least fresh, distinctive and funny. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review Scott D. Pierce Deseret News (Salt Lake City) It's awful. Macdonald is no actor, which doesn't preclude becoming a sitcom star. But the material here is so weak even Olivier couldn't make it look good. Jul 11, 2019 Full Review David Zurawik Baltimore Sun The interplay and comic tension between the characters of Laurie and Norm is one of the more pleasant surprises of TV's midseason.
