This Steven Bochco-produced series pulls few punches in portraying the day-to-day lives of cops in New York's 15th Precinct. Characters' personal lives intertwine with the cases they work, which often deal with the worst elements the city has to offer. Many characters came and went during the show's 12-season run but one constant throughout the series was Det. Andy Sipowicz, portrayed by Dennis Franz.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Arriving amid intense controversy, NYPD Blue is less vulgar -- and less original -- than anticipated, but David Caruso and Dennis Franz's magnetic performances give this police drama arresting grit.

Tony Squires Sydney Morning Herald Bochco goes close, but doesn't overdo the hand-held camera routine in his bid to replace art with reality. And in David Caruso and Dennis Franz, he has a couple of actors who bring depth to their roles as the ubiquitous young-cop-old-cop team. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Hugh Hebert Guardian Very smart, with not a single cop show cliché out of place, and with Detective Sipowicz providing a touch of self-parodic speed talk. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Gail Pennington St. Louis Post-Dispatch All in all, NYPD Blue is just another pretty good police show. It doesn't break new ground, except in creating such an unpleasant lead character. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Arion Berger L.A. Weekly With effort, Bochco pinches his nose and dives into issues of race and class; without effort, he makes a mess of it. Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Alan Pergament Buffalo News Quite simply the best new drama of the season. Rated: 4/5 Mar 2, 2021 Full Review Jennifer L. Stevenson Tampa Bay Times A compelling, stark drama about real cops and real problems. The drama forces us to care about people, despite their corrupt morals. To watch when we want to look away. ed m Recently rewatched Season 1. Excellent. David Caruso never should have left this show. He was born to play this role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Mike P At the time all the crazy camera angles were just WAF.... But that did lead to all the shaky cam dramas like Succession which dominate the landscape now. Good writing, good cast, and it's funny to see Dennis Franz' obnoxious cop character from Dressed to Kill and all those other movies and shows expanded into a full series; and command such control. Good overall... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/27/23 Full Review dave d Often misunderstood, it's hard to go back and rewatch the first season of NYPD Blue and not marvel at the innovations and envelope pushing. Hard to believe some people were considering this stuff pornographic. It's brilliance and it's magic with writers and creative minds in top form and actors who despite tensions on the set were able to create a masterpiece week in and week out. These episodes changed the game and thank goodness ABC never backed down! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
