Judy Berman TIME Magazine This is a meditative show for people who can't stomach meditation apps -- and thank heavens for that. Jul 29, 2021 Full Review John Semley The New Republic Painting With John restores something of premium cable's initial promise. It is singular, and strange, and obviously the work of a distinct perspective and personality. Jul 29, 2021 Full Review Peter Keough Boston Globe As he warns at the start, Lurie won't teach you how to paint, but after listening to his shaggy-dog stories and watching him create his numinous pictures he might make you want to try. Jul 28, 2021 Full Review Aaron Barnhart Primetimer Painting with John is nothing like Fishing with John, but what's remarkable is that even though we now have endless TV... Painting With John is, like its predecessor, a true original. Jul 28, 2021 Full Review Vikram Murthi The Nation A cult musician, actor, and director returns with a television show that's nominally about painting but is in reality a creative and spiritual journey. Apr 10, 2021 Full Review Sean Clancy Arkansas Democrat-Gazette It's a quiet, meandering, sometimes amusing, often comforting way to spend 20 minutes or so in front of the TV. Khevin M Calming and thought-provoking. The paintings and the songs are just fantastic. John Lurie is the perfect example of a modern multidisciplinary artist with fundamental intuition for self-expression. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/14/23 Full Review Matthew V Raw and original stories from a man who's had some amazing experiences. All while a new painting is presented each episode. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review Peter A It is a fantastic view into a creative person's mind. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/10/23 Full Review WarDriver84 A very interesting man, nothing sleek or tailored, what you see is what you get, the music is great and i love his views on things. Great for unwinding from a busy day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/05/23 Full Review Mark D Whimsical self deprecating offbeat creative magic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/23 Full Review David B John's music has brought me great joy for forty years. I am biased, but the soundtrack is worth the time spent. Beyond the songs, I love his stories. You can feel his sincerity. His creativity is unmatched. Watching the painting segments tells a compelling story of the paint and pulls me in so I can't wait to see what happens, how it turns out. The vignettes with friends and staff just get better as they learn what they want to do. The ladies are so tolerant of his shenanigans; there are many grins to be had. I savor each episode.
