When he suddenly loses his job, Russell Greene takes his family -- wife Wendy, son Josh, daughter Dinah and nephew Nathaniel, as well as his mother, Hattie -- on a sort of spiritual road trip to help those in need. With their motto, "We're all on this road together," they travel across the country, pulling their Airstream trailer, to redefine what the American Dream really means. At each stop, they find short-term work and manage to become involved in the community, usually finding one or more people to help along the way. This series is a spin-off of popular drama series "Touched by an Angel," with characters from that show occasionally making guest appearances on "Promised Land."

What to Know

Critics Consensus

This spinoff of Touched by an Angel may find fans in those already converted by its progenitor, but its treacly sanctimony doesn't make a convincing case for itself.

Michael Starr New York Post The series' '80s-era timeframe and its multi-generational story arc brings to mind sprawling nighttime soaps from that era - most notably "Dynasty" and "Dallas" - and "Promised Land" should prove itself a worthy successor in the genre. Jan 26, 2022 Full Review Caryn James New York Times The Greenes are less a family than they are a walking, talking version of ''The Book of Virtues.'' Jul 12, 2019 Full Review Todd Everett Variety It gives the "family values" crowd reason to huddle around the tube. Jul 12, 2019 Full Review Alan Pergament Buffalo News McRaney, Mr. Macho, seems miscast in a series that is more sappy than either political convention. Oct 26, 2021 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal It tries too hard to revive Michael Landon's oeuvre. It's really The Grapes of Wrath in a minivan. Oct 25, 2021 Full Review Rick Kushman Sacramento Bee It's hard to tell just where this will go because the pilot mixes casts with Touched by an Angel, but you can figure that if you like "Touched" you'll like this.
