Shawn Spencer happens to possess some uncanny powers of observation thanks to his father, Henry, a former police officer who taught his son to remember even the smallest details of his surroundings. When Shawn is accused of committing a crime that he actually solved, he convinces the cops that he's a psychic -- and with the reluctant help of best friend Gus, Shawn starts solving cases for a skeptical but increasingly impressed police force.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its premise is sure to draw comparisons to Monk, and Psych's lead character is an acquired taste at best.

Mike McDaniel Houston Chronicle The fun is in the tag-along, and the heretofore unheralded [James] Roday displays a knack for comedy. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Nancy Franklin The New Yorker Shawn is both in your face and completely absent as a human being. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Alessandra Stanley New York Times In "Psych," Shawn is supposed to be charmingly insouciant, and Gus is supposed to be comically uptight, and neither seems at ease in the assigned part. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Cynthia Fuchs PopMatters Psych seems an ideal show for its moment, as viewers can disdain its predictability and identify with its cynicism about that predictability at the same time. Rated: 5/10 Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Tom Jicha South Florida Sun-Sentinel James Roday, the youthful star of Psych, tries much too hard to make a character of his alter ego, Shawn Spencer, who's just a guy with a gimmick. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Chris Hicks Deseret News (Salt Lake City) The comedy is some of the best-written on television. Or anywhere. Feb 14, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

Brayden M Each season of Psych is equally as entertaining as the one prior. The amount of pop culture references and comedic aspects makes rewatchability endless. James Roday Rodrigues and Dule Hill make a great duo and each episode with Woody is 10x as enjoyable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/23/25 Full Review David W I've loved each series of this. It's been consistently hilarious, superbly plotted and with a fantastic cast of lovable characters all played beautifully by the superb cast. Brilliant. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Mason W Don't listen to the critics. This season is very entertaining and has very addicting characters Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/25 Full Review REAGAN P This show is awesome it's funny and can also be spooky and portraying! Definately recommending to anyone looking for their next funny cop show after Monk or Brooklyn 99. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/25 Full Review Rashid's E Psych is a brilliant show carried entirely by Shawn Spencer's charm and sharp observational skills. Shawn is an incredible lead, but Gus? Completely unnecessary. Gus is irritating, cowardly, and unreliable, adding nothing but dead weight. His constant whining and lack of courage make him a tiresome presence. Honestly, Shawn could've handled everything just fine without Gus dragging him down. The show would've been far better off focusing solely on Shawn's awesomeness, leaving Gus out of the picture. While meant to provide balance to Shawn's recklessness, Gus frequently adds more tension than support, and his role in the duo feels forced. Shawn's resourcefulness and charisma are more than enough to keep the series engaging, making Gus's presence almost redundant. Without him, the focus could have remained more on Shawn's incredible abilities, leaving room for more compelling dynamics in the cases and the relationships within the show. Ultimately, Psych shines brightest when it leans into Shawn's talents and humor, making Gus feel like a distraction rather than a valuable part of the team. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Brian G So this is the first show I absolutely fell in love with! Well, this and the Stargate when it was on Showtime! This show has it all! Comedy at its finest with Drama that everyone can engage with! Best of all, this show taught me what a great actor can do! I am talking about Shawn's Dad! Corbin Bernsen was one of the actors I used to not like! With this show it showed me the reason I did not like the actor is because he made me hate his characters. THAT GOOD ACTING! For a good actor, say David Ogden Steirs from Mash, GREAT actor! HATED character. Same with Corben Bernsen and Tim Omunbson. They acted their buts off! and for Dule' and James to have them opposite, Maggie and Kirsten as the fantastic female leads just make this cast the most engaging cast of characters I ever had the pleasure to follow, from episode one all the way thru The Lassie movie! A MUST WATCH! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
