Michael H Best Comedy ever with sci-fi elements in it Brilliant TV Show Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 3 of Red Dwarf is one of the few Seasons of any show where every episode is from Very Good to Excellent quality. Things start off with the absolutely hilarious (yet somewhat full of easy laughs) 'Backwards', which is actually rather straightforward, but does an excellent job of exploring how Lister, Rimmer and the Cat handle situations, as well as re-introducing Kryten, in a far, far more likeable persona moving forward. Things then take a turn with "Marooned", a somewhat funny but surprisingly deep bottleneck episode that simply crashes Lister and Rimmer and forces them to talk for most of the episode, while trying to find things to burn; this aspect in particular helps as we see how the two value certain physical items differently, and when it comes to their most personal affects, it really cements both as top-tier characters. Next we have the legendary 'Polymorph', quite possibly the best episode in the entire franchise - the premise is a bit silly and out-there, but it's effective, and the episode's near perfect magic trick is that it goes from scenes of laugh-out-loud funny to legitimate horror in seconds. Then comes 'Timeslides', another out-there premise but one that helps explore both Lister and Rimmer as characters, but whereas 'Marooned' was a dramedy, 'Timeslides' is a comedy through and through, and it's very funny throughout. Then comes 'Bodyswap', a fun episode that can be summed up with the title, but watching the actors playing each other, as well as how Rimmer acts inside Lister's body, are both entertaining, and this might sound odd, but the alternate-voice lip-syncing is probably the best I have ever seen anywhere. Then finally, we have 'The Last Day', an underappreciated masterpiece. Again, its premise is simple but it is effective for comedy (with slight bits of drama), character, and a surprisingly thrilling showdown at the end. This episode finally explores Kryten as a character, and it's brilliant in both writing and performance. I'm not even sure if spoiling it is possible - it's just great because of the moment-to-moment conversations and character interactions. And this episode also does a great job capping off this outstanding Season -- after a somewhat poor First Season and a good-but-uneven Second Season, Season 3 is really the ultimate step up, and is what began to cement Red Dwarf for what it is: A Legend. Rated 5/5 Stars •  Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Often hilarious and often as enjoyable as early Star Trek episodes with originality this show continues to expand what a sitcom can do. This season had an increase in budget so the sets have been upgraded from the first 2 seasons along with a new theme tune, i think it was to sell the show to the USA . Again the writing is the strength. They never manage to waste a gag and the timing is perfect. This was Red Dwarf at its peak..it would never soar as high. Holly did not return for this season as a male and is replaced with a blond bimbo. This could be seen as sexist nowadays and she was an ill fit. Also, Kryten is re-introduced from the previous season but with a new actor. His role is largely downplayed but he is the weakest link.
