New York firefighter Tommy Gavin is a hot mess. He talks to his cousin, Jimmy, who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and he's seeing ghosts of other victims, too. Spotlighting Denis Leary as Gavin, a temperamental alcoholic whose self-destructive behavior has cost him his family, the series revolves around the daily drama associated with being a firefighter in post-9/11 New York, and how the men of 62 Truck use dark humor to color their true feelings.

Critics Consensus

Rescue Me's second season plunges Denis Leary's avatar of traumatized rage down past new, unfound levels of rock bottom, forging achingly funny television in the process.

Melanie McFarland Seattle Post-Intelligencer Leary's character, the abrasively witty New York firefighter who is blunt to friends and a liar to lovers, has few redeeming qualities... That's the beauty of Rescue Me. Tommy is simultaneously loathsome and likable. Dec 12, 2018 Full Review Maureen Ryan Chicago Tribune Rescue Me's greatest strength may be in showing the terrifying, confusing situations that firefighters encounter every day. Dec 12, 2018 Full Review David Bianculli New York Daily News Its humor is as brittle and brutal as its intense scenes, and, like everything here else, is memorably credible. Rated: 5/5 Dec 12, 2018 Full Review Jason Zingale Bullz-Eye.com While season two could be chalked up as a disappointment for many fans (this reviewer included), it delivered the kind of build-up that could make season three one hell of year for the show. Rated: 4/5 Dec 12, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette An engrossing, character-driven series. Dec 12, 2018 Full Review People Staff People Magazine Thanks to the nimble Leary, ever riveting as TV's most nuanced antihero (sorry, Tony Soprano), Tommy's tenuous struggle for sobriety is even more rewarding than last season's harrowing downfall.
