Emmy-nominated actress Natasha Lyonne stars in this comedy-drama series as Nadia, a young woman who is on a journey to be the guest of honor at a party in New York City. But she gets caught in a mysterious loop as she repeatedly attends the same event and dies at the end of the night each time -- only to awaken the next day unharmed as if nothing had happened. In addition to starring, Lyonne co-created the show with "Saturday Night Live" alum Amy Poehler and serves as a writer and director for the Netflix original series.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Not all of Russian Doll's gambles pay off in this ambitious and thrillingly audacious second season, but the show's willingness to take risks is often its own reward.

Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic Raw, bruising, and existentially heavier than its predecessor. If the first installment felt miraculously complete, the seven new episodes feel instead like a slide down into a darker space. Apr 25, 2022 Full Review Lauren Sarner New York Post The show is a shining example of how the sci-fi genre doesn’t have to consist of laundry lists of nonsense fake science terms and explosions; it can be used to tell thoughtful stories that speak to the roots of human nature. Apr 24, 2022 Full Review Terry Nguyen Vox It is an ambitious but ultimately lacking attempt at illustrating how trauma is inherited from one generation to the next, at the expense of the protagonists’ development and season one friendship. Apr 22, 2022 Full Review Tamma Moksha The Hindu Each scene, sequence and episode of the show is tempered with multiple social and philosophical questions, all of which are significant and carry a certain weight. Jun 12, 2024 Full Review Jackson Weaver CBC News [Lyonne] does everything to continue the exceptionally well-realized characters that originally drew audiences in, but with an expanded scope and looser focus... Even with a different feel than the original, Season 2 is still one of the best things on TV. Rated: 4/5 Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Nuha Hassan Flip Screen Compulsively entertaining and addictive in the sense that it has a way of leaving room for future possibilities of more stories down the line. Dude C It’s was pretty good (season 1) but this season pretty bad. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Wes W Not quite as good as the first season. I liked the "repeat" aspect of season 1 as opposed to the "time travel" aspect of season 2. For storytelling, it seemed to make for a more coherent plot. Things get super out-of-hand toward the end of season 2. But it's still a fun journey to go on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Dani M Original, inventive and fresh. The soundtrack is great as well. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/23/23 Full Review Valerii Ege D Russian Doll is still a sweet show. Natasha Lyonne is a fantastic actress. She's running the show alone. The transitions between the times and the characters were enjoyable. But I watched it, and yes, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as meaningful as the first one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review Matt J You can feel the desperation in the writers trying to recapture the magic of the first season. Alan is relegated to occasionally showing up when they run out of completely random story pivots for Nadia. The performances are as stellar as ever but there isn't anything to grab hold of in the story until the final episode of the season where they seem to have realised they actually need something approximating a conclusion to the story salad of the previous 6 episodes. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/17/23 Full Review James H Though not as impressive as its first season, Season 2 more than delivers on the fantastical weirdness fans of the show are looking for.
