Despite a strong start, Sanditon's soapy drama quickly dissolves into nothing more than just another beautiful, melodramatic period piece.

Carl R Great story. Theo James and other made this a enjoyable series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Stace D A very disappointing ending to this season. A complete waste of relationship building with the two main characters. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Maureen P Loved this period piece. Dialog wonderful as well as costumes. Amazing actors. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review JAMES S Utter tripe. Makes "The Bold and the beautiful" look like genius. A complete waste of space. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/23 Full Review Lucy P Season 1 is fresh and exciting. A unique take on Austen by the master of Austen adaptations, Andrew Davies. That said, it's far from perfect and takes many liberties with the source material, but it's bold, edgy and sexy as hell (even though most of the characters keep their clothes on). Using Austen's unfinished fragment as a starting block, Davies creates a believable Regency world embedded in historical reality, using the gorgeous backdrop of the sea, beach and cliffs to their full effect, underpinned by the beautiful musical score. As the episodes progress, it descends into romantic melodrama, but this is elevated by the superb performances of the central couple, Sidney and Charlotte (Theo James and Rose Williams) whose raw honesty and emotion builds a very believable, touching romance. The Esther - Clara - Edward trio is also superbly acted, even if the storyline is a bit Gothic in tone, while the jokey triumvirate of Sidney, Crowe and Babington is a pleasure to watch. The story of Miss Lambe, the mixed race heiress from Antigua, starts off well and the themes of slavery and black identity are boldly explored, but this storyline falters towards the end and could have done with more careful handling. The ending is melodramatic and frustrating - a cynical move to create demand for a second season, albeit powerfully acted. A short-sighted move on the part of the writers/producers as Sidney and Charlotte's love story was destined never to be completed. Robyn Bahr Hollywood Reporter Even in spite of Sanditon's many prosaic faults, I left the finale thinking, "Wow. They really went for it." Jan 13, 2020 Full Review Ann Donahue indieWire "Sanditon" is sexy escapism for winter, tart and political, gorgeous and honest. Austen would have loved it. Rated: A- Jan 11, 2020 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail It's fabulously distracting, lavish, humane, funny, romantic and sexy as all get-out. Jan 10, 2020 Full Review Lynden Barber Limelight ...a more conventional production inspired by the dozen or so chapters of Austen's unfinished final novel of the same name - expanded freely for TV by - who else? - Davies. Jul 23, 2021 Full Review Diane Pershing Malibu Times This first season leaves us hanging and as long as Davies was fabricating a story line that did not exist, I'm am hoping there will be a season two. Jan 9, 2021 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz A delicious period drama filled with all the misunderstandings, scheming siblings, family fortunes, caddish gentlemen, confidences, conspiracies and "mean, miserly old monsters" the genre demands.
