A very disappointing ending to this season. A complete waste of relationship building with the two main characters.

Utter tripe. Makes "The Bold and the beautiful" look like genius. A complete waste of space.

Season 1 is fresh and exciting. A unique take on Austen by the master of Austen adaptations, Andrew Davies. That said, it's far from perfect and takes many liberties with the source material, but it's bold, edgy and sexy as hell (even though most of the characters keep their clothes on). Using Austen's unfinished fragment as a starting block, Davies creates a believable Regency world embedded in historical reality, using the gorgeous backdrop of the sea, beach and cliffs to their full effect, underpinned by the beautiful musical score.
As the episodes progress, it descends into romantic melodrama, but this is elevated by the superb performances of the central couple, Sidney and Charlotte (Theo James and Rose Williams) whose raw honesty and emotion builds a very believable, touching romance.
The Esther - Clara - Edward trio is also superbly acted, even if the storyline is a bit Gothic in tone, while the jokey triumvirate of Sidney, Crowe and Babington is a pleasure to watch.
The story of Miss Lambe, the mixed race heiress from Antigua, starts off well and the themes of slavery and black identity are boldly explored, but this storyline falters towards the end and could have done with more careful handling.
The ending is melodramatic and frustrating - a cynical move to create demand for a second season, albeit powerfully acted. A short-sighted move on the part of the writers/producers as Sidney and Charlotte's love story was destined never to be completed.
