Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman for CBS All Access, the story of "Star Trek: Discovery" begins roughly a decade before Captain Kirk's five-year mission -- as portrayed in the original "Star Trek" from the 1960s -- and a century before the events of "Star Trek: Enterprise." The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The second season of Discovery successfully -- if stubbornly -- cleans up the problematic storylines of Trek past while still effectively dramatizing new takes on the lore.

Riese Bernard Autostraddle This show did a lot of interesting psychological stuff with how we are shaped by trauma, both personal and intergenerational. Oct 27, 2021 Full Review Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya Autostraddle It has very well written, dynamic, complex characters... The relationship dynamics on this show are rich, believable, and very fun to watch play out in different scenarios. Oct 27, 2021 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR "Star Trek: Discovery's" second season offers a bit more traditional "Trek" adventure while promising to show new sides of characters that fans have known for decades - talk about going boldly where no one has gone before. Nov 23, 2019 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Star Trek: Discovery has a stronger second season--keeping the focus on Burnham while bringing in Pike and Spock--before the crew jumps into the future. Tyrone C It gets worse from the first season, they doubled down on all the stuff fans didnt like. Surprise. This is not star trek. That IP was bought out and has been long gone in spirit. "In name only is an applicable phrase here". Should be thought provoking and not have everyone crying every episode. Feels like it was written by a high schooler. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review kyle s Better than the first season....maybe because Spock is in it...and captain pike...but....This whole show is still trash....the multiple camera angle is jarring ....every moment is high drama! when some one has to go to the bathroom ....high drama.....the face acting is over the top. they fucked up the story by having Spock have a sister...out of no where...why did they do that? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/12/25 Full Review Audience Member Beyond allowing the characters to mature, the series explores a whole host of fascinating scientific themes. The relationship between Stamets and Hugh becomes complex and just as daring as tv can allow. Burnham really steps into her shoes. It is a really good season, and better than the Klingon soap opera of the previous season. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review George A Somehow worse than season one. I kept watching, hoping it would get better. Spoiler alert, it doesn’t. Oh well, I did it to myself. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Gustav G Kurtzman said they wanted to stay true to canon, but they were also doing a lot of new invention that has nothing to do with canon. I know this is difficult, but it is no excuse for this pointless show with its unlikable characters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Hunter M I'm here because the disparity between critic and audience ratings of this show is BANANAS. I've watched it up until the middle of Season 4 and I highly recommend the first three seasons... To understand where I'm coming from, I'll provide some opinions on other shows, and you can decide if we have enough in common to pay attention to this review. Great to Good Sci-Fi TV: Cowboy Bebop... Firefly... Andor Good to Decent Sci-Fi TV: Battlestar Galactica... The Mandalorian... Stranger Things... I think that for this show, the first and second seasons, and possibly the third, fall under Great to Good. For me, the fourth season has been a huge disappointment but a small price to pay for the previous 30-something hours of story. I've wondered about the disparity mentioned above, though. I imagine it's a combination of at least: 1. The drop in quality during seasons 4 and (I would guess) 5. 2. The inevitable tsunami of hurt feelings that come from massive fanbases when the source material is used as inspiration for a story instead of a manual for what to create. Look at certain Marvel movies... 3. The well-intentioned and noble pursuit of diversity and inclusion becoming so heavy-handed and ubiquitous... In my opinion, there's a point where the writers are clearly only being paid by how much they can beat these dead horses. The first three seasons championed this pursuit with good taste. After that it felt like it became an unhealthy obsession. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Read all reviews
