Bay Kennish is a teenager who grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother. Fellow teen Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age, was raised by a single mother in a working-class neighborhood. One day in her high-school chemistry class, Bay discovers that her blood type doesn't match either of her parents'. Official tests confirm that Bay is not her parents' birth child. When the Kennish family meets Daphne and her mom, Regina, they realize that the girls were switched at birth. The news prompts the Kennishes to allow Regina -- who is experiencing financial difficulties -- Daphne and Daphne's grandmother to live in their guest house. The two polar-opposite families struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls, who try to keep their footing in both the world they know and the new one into which they are thrown.

Caroline Preece TV Equals One of the best things about this show is how it doesn't let it's characters [off] the hook or forget about past mistakes and triumphs. Jan 16, 2014 Full Review Billy Nilles Zap2it.com It's nice to see Switched at Birth push its characters into new territory based on consequences from earlier actions, rather than just create issues out of thin air. jon c 3 seasons in and the show hasn’t lost its appeal. Big changes are in store for Bay and Daphne. Summer is over and now the girls enter their senior year at Carlton. But the biggest shock is now so many students are attending along with security checkpoints. As you can imagine not all of them share the same enthusiasm for just going to class. Near the finale Carlton faces the worst news they’ve had but the students remain strong, unified, diverse, and above all optimistic. Not to mention there’s a special holiday episode that takes the ‘what if’ scenario something the viewers have always imagined. One student in particular, Sharee feels like she and her friends have been dumped at Carlton as a result of their other schools shutting down. Sharee actually has a dark secret she’s hiding from everyone else and Daphne wants to help. Angelo and Regina seem to be in a good spot now. Regina gets a new career but wants to do it her own way without stepping on anybody. Sadly Angelo suffers a terrible fate and everyone is forced to make a heartbreaking choice. Later we also see that he had a brother and a sister in which Bay makes a startling discovery. Toby and Nikki are officially married now. Toby wants to be independent but his folks are having a hard time respecting his decisions. He comes back from a trip in Iceland hoping to start a career of his own. Bay takes an elective art class and meets a fraternity boy named Tank. He’s a bit much to handle. They do start something together. Bay also has an injury later on that may affect her desire to paint. After a supporting character dies Bay is just as hurt as everyone else and does her best to help Daphne deal with it. Daphne took responsibility for her actions at the senator’s office turning in the politician so she faces community service. She meets Campbell, a paraplegic who befriends her. She goes to work at a free clinic and meets a nurse Jorge. A love triangle ensues complicating things. Daphne also wants to further her education by asserting her identity by applying for a scholarship as well as taking the SATs for her pre-med degree. She worries though if she can live up to her potential. After a huge tragedy she does her best to get past it resorting to the unthinkable even pushing Regina away. Emmet continues to be there for Bay. He starts seeing a girl named Mandy. Who knows if they can still have something again in the days to come. Halfway through the season he deals with a bully that actually is ashamed of something he’s been keeping to himself for a while. Kathryn and John are also facing marital issues. They end up disagreeing so much about what’s more important to them. Kathryn’s success seems to be taking off. Almost everyone is facing an impossible dilemma to get through whether it’s reigniting old flames, taking risky business decisions, life or death situations, rites of passage, and midlife crises. There’s also a special episode showcasing the beauty of show business. It’s so classy. Great dance numbers too. You shouldn’t let unhappy people decide what you want to do. The most powerful memories aren’t flat or linear. Sometimes they make you dizzy. There may be so many things you miss out on being deaf but there are always new ones to experience. No one’s going to hand you a ladder, you have to build one of your own. We can either be independent and self-reliant or accept help from others. When you’re a parent you want to keep your children close, not share them with anyone else. Love is the same for all; you can’t see it, hear it or measure it. It’s also doing what the other person wants even if it’s not what you want. Rules are important but not if it makes everyone else feel left out like they don’t belong. It’s easy to be angry but sooner or later we find one another. Season 3 may not surpass the first 2 seasons but it’s incredible to see both these girls and their families grow in many unexpected ways. They still make it through the laughs, the tears, and the many plot turns. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I would rather pull off all my eyelashes than watch one more episode of this train wreck of a show. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Season 3: What I got to say is that the drama just gets better and better every episodes that I watch.
