Bay Kennish is a teenager who grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother. Fellow teen Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age, was raised by a single mother in a working-class neighborhood. One day in her high-school chemistry class, Bay discovers that her blood type doesn't match either of her parents'. Official tests confirm that Bay is not her parents' birth child. When the Kennish family meets Daphne and her mom, Regina, they realize that the girls were switched at birth. The news prompts the Kennishes to allow Regina -- who is experiencing financial difficulties -- Daphne and Daphne's grandmother to live in their guest house. The two polar-opposite families struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls, who try to keep their footing in both the world they know and the new one into which they are thrown.

Bethonie Butler Washington Post The show has tackled a number of social issues, including sexual consent, over its nearly six-year run. But Switched, now in its final season, has been just as compelling in exploring the daily lives of its main characters. Mar 3, 2017 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times It is a series that has shown, consistently and without much fanfare, how to illuminate deaf culture - and, by extension, any other that faces impairments - without being condescending, sensationalizing or preachy. Sylvia S Easy to watch, heart warming show. Even tho it's directed and addressed mostly toward teenagers. I am a viewer in my 40's and I couldn't wait so see another episode. All the seasons equally deserve 5 stars! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review jon c The 5th and final season of one of Freeform's bests shows starts off in the not-so-happy way. But a lot of big developments took shape last time; Toby and Lily had their baby and moved to London. Travis confessed his love for Bay and a similar traumatic incident that happened years ago. Daphne went to China with Bay for her deaf aid program. Regina lost another love from him leaving with his kid and his mother from the law. Season 5 starts with Bay suffering an affliction in which Daphne barely saves her. Emmett and Bay are no longer an item. Emmett's mother is still waiting to adopt a baby with her new husband. Travis also arrives in China to see Bay. But something happens forcing Bay and Daphne to come back home. Daphne's roommate Iris also comes out with a deep turmoil that's bothered her for some time in terms of being on campus. She also runs into a woman, Ally with a huge tie to Angelo. She's more determined than ever to become a doctor and not let her disability stand in the way of it. Bay finally finds her passion in the form of being a tattoo artist. Travis is then given an amazing business opportunity that could change everything. Toby and Lily express their differences on how to raise a child with down syndrome as best they can. Regina has taken to dating a younger man in a math class. She wonders though if her future can still happen without the Kennishes. New topical issues range from suicide to racial tensions to freedom of expression to seniority. College isn't supposed to be a safe place, it's a place where everyone can grow intellectually. Something has to be done to make the change happen and for people to notice it. If we want something bad enough we usually get it. Season 5 is shorter but Lizzy Weiss has managed to wrap up everyone's storylines as best she can. Bay, Daphne, Toby, John, Kathyrn, Emmett, Travis and Regina are moving onto bigger things. Some will change but others won't. Switched at Birth has been one of the finer examples of a blended family coming together in the most unexpected of circumstances. Laughs, tears, and growing as people thankfully worked for each episode and I am grateful for it. Very happy my mind has been opened to the deaf community as well, my respect for it has increased a lot. Cheers to five years of the Kennishes and the Vasquezs making it through an enormous change. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I was a dedicated Switched at Birth fan, but after a VERY long wait, season 5 is nothing but disappointing drivel. The "sisters" spent 9 months in China and came back unchanged. Daphne is the same old Daphne , making every moment in life about herself, especially those involving Bay. In several seasons now she has shown NO personal growth. And seriously, the constant whining on this show has to stop. Episode 3 was 96% whining! I had a headache by the end. I was surprised this series was cancelled and the season pushed back a year, but it's easy to see why. I am guessing Freeform wanted to establish quality before airing nonsense.
