Cutthroat presidential advisers get their personal lives hopelessly tangled up with professional duties as they try to conduct the business of running a country. Fictional Democratic President Josiah "Jed" Bartlet suffers no fools, and that policy alienates many. He and his dedicated staffers struggle to balance the needs of the country with the political realities of Washington, D.C., working through two presidential terms that include countless scandals, threats and political scuffles, as well as the race to succeed Bartlet as the leader of the free world.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Practically a screwball comedy with Aaron Sorkin's rat-a-tat dialogue and the ensemble's wonderful chemistry, The West Wing resplendently renders every voter's dearest fantasy: competent politicians with good intentions.

Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) The show's US reputation preceded its arrival here and is thoroughly justified. There hasn't been a dead second so far in this dynamite, Emmy-sprinkled series. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Jonathan Green The Age (Australia) This is probably the best thing that's been on telly all year. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Brian Courtis The Age (Australia) It's a lot more entertaining than feeling Bushed or getting Gored every night on the news and current affairs shows. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy It’s a fictional series that draws upon real-life incidents, and it’s rather remarkable how often it does that without ever feeling exploitative of the subject matter or condescending toward the audience. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 20, 2024 Full Review Rich Heldenfels Akron Beacon Journal It's the sort of show that makes you want to know more about its characters, not simply about their personal lives but about what they believe. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Alan Pergament Buffalo News If he weren't a great writer, "West Wing" creator Aaron Sorkin would have made a helluva presidential candidate. First name L As a moderate, even when Sorkin pontificates, this is a sensational drama. If a single season of this cabinet drama is this thrilling, I cannot wait to see where it goes next. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review William D This is the greatest show ever made. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/23 Full Review Ricardo Y Even after 20 years since its first season, West Wing is still relevant. The show provides quick-witted dialogues, challenging situations and a good balance of humour to the White House world. The characters are interesting and are portrayed as nice individuals who have to take some tough decisions, eventually making mistakes, but always with good intentions. Something like a Democratic dream version of Camelot. The world would be a better place if we had people like Bartlett, Josh, Toby, Sam and Leo. But unfortunately it's more complicated than that. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Satisfying television with heart and intelligence Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent cast. It was an idealized view of what apparently Hollywood thinks that Democrat politicians are, which is not based in reality that the last few years have clearly revealed. It seems kind of bland because of that since real life political drama is far more exciting. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Although I am a great fan of Aaron Sorkin, and I know this was the TV series who made it famous, and despite I appreciate the accute dialogs, the episodes look so light to me, maybe because they lack of conflict in this too idealistic vision of the politics. At the moment, I have seen 5 episodes, and I don't know if I would see any more. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
