In 1958, a grisly string of murders terrified the Midwest as teenager Charles Starkweather killed 11 victims in Nebraska and Wyoming with his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, by his side. As one of the first true-crime stories to unfold in real time on television, the widely covered Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative depicted Starkweather as a James Dean-wannabe and Fugate as his lascivious, bloodthirsty girlfriend. Using archival and re-created footage, and interviews with those closest to the case, the crimes are reviewed to examine whether Fugate was a willing participant or an underage girl held hostage by Starkweather.

Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It repeats itself a lot and has a habit of wandering off into the lives of the people who wrote the book on which it is based in unrewarding ways, but there’s value to be had in challenging a story that has never been told in the right way before. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 18, 2023 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal The 12th Victim is a beautiful thing to watch, in its black-and-white interviews and dreamy aesthetic, but it will leave a viewer in a troubled state of reflection long after it is over. Feb 18, 2023 Full Review Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter If you know the story and its details, you will learn nothing new or even re-contextualized. Feb 17, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Monte L Not your typical "look at this victim" doc. The 12th Victim is a must-see, brilliantly done! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review Jill D "The 12th Victim" was gripping from the first image to the last. Caril's story has never been told before and it was fascinating and disturbing to see how she was railroaded into being deemed a killer, when in fact she was a 14 yo hostage. The Starkweather case is revisited and this time with Caril at its center. "The 12th Victim" hits the sweet spot between true crime and brilliant narrative. A must-see. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review Adam P Come for the Bonnie and Clyde narrative, stay for the stark depiction of our collective fascination with youth, violence, and celebrity. Enthusiastic thumbs up! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/23 Full Review David F An excellent documentary about the killing spree of Charles Starkweather across Nebraska and Wyoming in the 1950s which inspired filmmakers, writers, and musicians. In addition to recounting those true crime events, this documentary also explores the treatment of Caril Ann Fugate who was with Starkweather by the police, the courts, and popular culture. It is an eye-opening reconsideration of what we thought we knew about it. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
