"The A Word" is a drama miniseries written by BAFTA Award winner Peter Bowker ("Blackpool") and starring Christopher Eccleston, Morven Christie, Greg McHugh, Lee Ingleby and Vinette Robinson. The story follows members of the Hughes family, who seem to lead a normal existence until they receive some unexpected news. Communication problems with 5-year-old son Joe lead to a diagnosis of autism. It changes the lives of the family members, who have to pull together and learn to better communicate to deal with the boy's condition.

The A Word's second season expands its scope beyond the series' inciting diagnosis and blossoms into a thoughtful and warm view on the dynamics of family, while also candidly addressing the realities of raising a child with autism.

Allison Keene Collider The A Word lets its family drama work on us as a slow burn, leaving us with a complex and difficult conclusion to its second season. Apr 23, 2019 Full Review Lucinda Everett Daily Telegraph (UK) Peter Bowker's deft writing, though, is all about the complexities of family life -- the shared jokes and the sacrifices, the deep love, deep breaths and held tongues Rated: 4/5 Apr 23, 2019 Full Review David Stubbs Guardian This series, originally revolving around young Joe and his autism, has broadened into a warm, earthy, almost soapy study of family life. Apr 23, 2019 Full Review Alice Hinds Daily Record (UK) Having created a fine example of sensitive, inquisitive and moving television, writer Peter Bowker gets an A+ from me. Apr 23, 2019 Full Review Saskia Baron The Arts Desk I don't have much hope that it'll rise much above classy soap opera, and I mourn a lost opportunity to tell a more nuanced story about autism. Rated: 3/5 Apr 23, 2019 Full Review Adrian Hennigan Haaretz "The A Word" really is the rarest of beast: feel-good television without a bloody corpse in sight. Do yourself a favor and allow yourself to fall for its charms. May 22, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
