The Academy Awards — 77th Oscars

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Chris Rock brings a welcome dose of irreverence to the 77th Oscars, but his polarizing barbs still can't fully elevate a ceremony that struggles to balance showtime efficiency and giving honorees their proper due.

Verne Gay Newsday [Chris Rock] crammed more energy and politics into one monologue than all of the previous monologues of the century combined... What he did do was give The 77th Annual Academy Awards a needed pick-me-up, presiding over the broadcast with saucy finesse. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Gillian Flynn Entertainment Weekly Chris Rock naysayers, I will concede that his opening monologue stank... [But] after that wobbly start, Rock turned out to be a springy, gleeful host for ABC's glitch-filled, vaguely experimental Oscars. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Michael Dwyer Irish Times Another reason the show was so lackluster was that the comedian Chris Rock, master of ceremonies for the evening, failed to impose his own personality on the proceedings. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Jeff Vice Deseret News (Salt Lake City) It still took [more] than three hours to hand out two dozen awards... It didn't help that first-time host Chris Rock rambled on for nearly 15 painfully unfunny minutes in his opening monologue. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Jeff Simon Buffalo News It's imperative that interested parties get real here. The Oscars have turned into godawful TV. Nov 1, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews
