The Academy Awards — 93rd Oscars

      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The 93rd Oscars definitely delivered something different, but after a strong opening moment with Regina King, the changes to this year's ceremony cemented the importance of certain structural traditions -- and how damaging hedging your bets on the Academy's votes can be.

Audience Member I gave it a half because a negative score wasn't available. During an awards show about movies, a visual medium, during the pandemic, they did away with clips. Instead movie stars told other movie stars how amazing they were and then those ass kissed movie stars climbed on soap boxes an delivered social justice messages. It was cringeworthy self-righteous. It was boring. It was lazy. It was the single biggest piece of crap I have ever seen. They should be so embarrassed. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Suz M How much longer can we stand a 3-4 hour self congratulatory infomercial? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/01/21 Full Review Audience Member Why can the academy not know how to put on an entertaining show. This show felt so lacking in spectacle and movie magic. And Why is there no host?? Without someone acting as host and guide.. the show just feels lost to me. Hard to rally around it.. when there is no person to do that. The movies can act as that to a degree.. but where is the central figure to get us excited and to excite us. Boo. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm happy with the winners. But the presentation felt like the awards at a film school. Really amateur setup and it was all out of order Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Liam D While some of the movies got the right awards and surprises with great speeches from the winners and presenters the final two categories especially best actor almost ruins it Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/28/21 Full Review Audience Member I don't remember so much, only remember Glenn Close moving his body Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Ryan Gilbey New Statesman At times, this one had the air of a modest industry luncheon for local shopkeepers, a reflection perhaps of the diminished status of film-going in the past 13 months. Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Mick LaSalle San Francisco Chronicle So it was a drab Oscar year, and a year no one would want to repeat, but at least this time progress was made. Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Peter Travers ABC News Low ratings, longwinded speeches about films hardly anyone saw, and an anticlimax that failed to honor Chadwick Boseman-all set in a train station where you never saw a train-and yet the pandemic Oscar show went on and on and on. . . Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Rich Juzwiak The Muse/Jezebel The ceremony was largely inert, besides some highlights like Youn Yuh-jung's Best Supporting Actress acceptance speech and Glenn Close doin' da butt. Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Joshua Rivera Polygon This year's ceremony got one thing right: It felt like a party, a show put together for the people in the room. If there's a way to invite more of us into that fun, maybe the Oscars will be on to something. Apr 27, 2021 Full Review Pete Hammond Deadline Hollywood Daily The Oscars this year of all years should have been a great big global commercial for motion pictures and the need for them in our lives. I brought my "movie love." I don't feel like the 93rd Annual Academy Awards quite returned it. Apr 26, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
