This action-packed fantasy-drama revisits the saga of King Arthur and his wizard, Merlin, by focusing on the two characters when they were ambitious young men struggling to understand their destinies. In this telling, Prince Arthur is known to be the heir to the throne (no sword from the stone here). And he is acquainted with all those who will one day form the legend of Camelot, including Lancelot, Guinevere, and Morgana. Merlin is also forced to deal with King Uther's Great Purge, which bans all use of magic.

Ben Walsh Independent (UK) It's a pity John Hurt's dragon has little to do, but the addition of more knights and murkier tales makes up for the loss. Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Sam Wollaston Guardian Morgana's to blame for the mayhem. I knew that girl was trouble; something about her flashing yellow eyes, her long black hoodie and the way she can send a knight in full armour flying just by waving an arm. Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Mark Braxton Radio Times This first of a two-part story is a little sluggish, but there are decent, ghoulish scares, and it's good to have the show back. Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Ciara Monya TV Equals There were a few cool bits in this episode. Gaius convincing Arthur to take Merlin more seriously is a moment I did not expect but after four years I it welcomed it enthusiastically. Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Dave Bradley SFX Magazine It does pleasantly expand on the universe of the series. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Dave Adamson Den of Geek As long as you don't expect it to be pure drama, high brow fantasy or a necessarily accurate retelling of Arthurian legend, there's plenty to enjoy. Audience Member The season started with two very tragic episodes, I can say almost scary. I could sense Merlin's distress and fear. Oh what a superb show! And Nathaniel Parker was a really creepy fellow! I really enjoyed when Merlin finally did away with Agravaine. And the endings with Arthur and Gwen getting married was so nice. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Probably the worst season but still has some incredible and story changing episodes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member If you want a program like nothing else then this is the one for you. Very well written, beautifully focused/designed & warmly entertaining. Constant character development without it feeling forced - a real breath of fresh air! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This season has to be the best one, it has the most character development and, even after Uther fell into deep depression because of Morgana he still got the power to go to Arthur's birthday. Even when Arthur got attacked he still stood up to the attacker although this later kills him it still shows his commitment to his son and Camelot. For Arthur, this was probably the hardest thing to witness since he found out Morganna was his sister. He had to decide whether to use magic, the thing his father has been fighting against all of Arthur's life and killed his wife, to safe his life. Arthur decides to use magic but Morganna uses a charm to reverse the effects of Merlin's magic and make it 10 times worst killing Uther. Because of this Arthur now says that "magic if pure evil" since it killed both of his parents now. This had to be the hardest thing for Merlin since he didn't know what Morganna did and made Arthur turn against magic forever. Later in the season when he captures a king and kills him, because of his uncle, this makes war between Camelot and now the king's wife's kingdom. Authur decides to fight someone instead of having a war. Morganna uses her magic to enchant his sword to weigh too much to handle. This proves to be useless since merlin helps Arthur survive with his magic. Authur spares his challenger and makes peace with another kingdom. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Merlin keeps improving, not only in character development, except for King Arthur, who sometimes seems more empty head than a rock, but also in visual effects, that aren't still perfect, but are most watchable. It is original, but it need to take more risks and surprise more the spectator. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I am addicted to this show.
