This action-packed fantasy-drama revisits the saga of King Arthur and his wizard, Merlin, by focusing on the two characters when they were ambitious young men struggling to understand their destinies. In this telling, Prince Arthur is known to be the heir to the throne (no sword from the stone here). And he is acquainted with all those who will one day form the legend of Camelot, including Lancelot, Guinevere, and Morgana. Merlin is also forced to deal with King Uther's Great Purge, which bans all use of magic.

Matthew Macaulay Daily Telegraph (UK) The Merlin finale had all of the ingredients of a great ending: an epic battle, a leader making the ultimate sacrifice for his people and the triumph of good over evil. Rated: 3/5 Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Sam Wollaston Guardian It's all quite good fun, even if you're not exactly the target audience. Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Stuart Heritage Guardian The biggest joy of Merlin came from watching it improve year on year. Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Abigail Chandler Starburst Colin Morgan and Bradley James have always had incredible chemistry and it's all cashed in here. Their scenes are heartbreaking and beautifully portrayed. There was more bromance in this one episode that in Sherlock and Supernatural put together. Rated: 9/10 Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Mark Braxton Radio Times It's always been classy fare, but if anything Merlin is even more confident now. Still expansively filmed and able to entice great names, there's now more beef to the battles and punch to the humour. Oct 29, 2019 Full Review Dave Bradley SFX Magazine [There are] all things that make for an unsettling 43 minutes. Rated: 4.5/5 Oct 18, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Haewon L This show is wonderful. While it may seem like a lighthearted adventure series filled with humor at first glance, this series is so much more than that. The character development, story, and the acting... It's the kind of show you don't see much nowadays. It leaves you smiling in joy and sobbing in grief in some scenes, absolutely wrecked in the last episode. Honest to god, the ending will leave you in tears. It's the exact type of show that leaves you with endless what ifs which is why it's painful. (Though I might be a bit biased here since this show was my literal childhood) Should definitely watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/24 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey's TV Review: Merlin (2008 - 2012) The BBC sucessfully brought back 'multi-generational family viewing' and gave us a truly epic retelling of the Arthurian legends, as seen through the eyes of a young warlock. Merlin ran for 5 seasons with an emphasis on fun, action filled drama and a solid story arc. Joining the fresh young main cast of Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Angel Coulby, and Katie McGrath were TV veterans Anthony Head (Buffy), Richard Wilson (One Foot In The Grave) and John Hurt (Alien) as the voice of Kilgharrah the Dragon. Thanks to its Welsh production (and timing) it shared of lot of the same actors with the BBC's other successful revamp, Doctor Who. In turn, many of these players then went on to star in HBO's Game Of Thrones. Filming took place throught beautiful key locations in Wales including the Brecon Beacons National Park, Castell Coch, Caerphilly and Chepstow Castle. While Camelot itself was actually the 13th Century Château de Pierrefonds in the Forest of Compiègne, near Paris, France. Meanwhile, the scripts were sharp thanks to writers such as Howard Overman (Misfits), and the creature FX by 'The Mill' (Doctor Who) continually improved throught the run. But what makes it such good TV is how smartly it gathers together elements from the various versions of the story, without losing sight of what makes the saga so engaging. If you're missing a little (b)romance, sword play, one-liners and magic in your life, you could do a lot worse than revist this charming adventure.
