Shown in Great Britain for more than five years (debuting in 1961) before it caught on in America, "The Avengers" is a secret-agent thriller that almost bests James Bond. Jonathan Steed -- an urbane, proper gentleman spy -- teams with various assistants throughout the series' run, including Dr. David Keel, Cathy Gale, Emma Peel and Tara King, to repeatedly save the world from diabolical schemes plotted by equally diabolical evil-doers (among them robots and man-eating monsters).

Donald Clarke Irish Times Redefined notions of camp. Dec 5, 2018 Full Review Lisel Schillinger New York Times 'The Avengers exhibited more style and daring than is to be had on all of Milan's runways, and more wit and winks (well, winks, anyway) than the oeuvres of Oscar Wilde and Monty Python combined. Dec 5, 2018 Full Review Dick Fiddy Daily Telegraph (UK) Despite the failure of the Hollywood movie version, the television series enjoys a vibrant afterlife, with regular repeat screenings, video and DVD releases, sales of memorabilia and umpteen articles. Dec 5, 2018 Full Review Alex Westthorp Den of Geek What began as a monochrome tape series in January 1961 ran the whole of the 1960s, becoming a colourful slice of period hokum, full of flair, wit and sophistication, yet with its tongue firmly in its cheek. Tom W Very crude and almost unwatchable. I grew up on the Emma Peel seasons without even knowing there were 3 prior seasons with Honor Blackman. These earlier seasons remind me of Dark Shadows. Just a step above listening to radio programs I should think. The earliest days of the Avengers, version 1.0; a novelty. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/09/23 Full Review steve d Terrible how little of it still remains. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Through it's long and sometimes tumultuous run, The Avengers set the standard and redefined the spy-fi genre of television programs. Patrick Macnee's John Steed was the old school elegance and charm, while trendsetting partners such as Dame Diana Rigg's Emma Peel were the (at the time) current, trendy young women of the '60's. Brilliant writing, bizarre to outlandish 'diabolical masterminds', and wicked chemistry between the stars (no matter which female partnered with Steed) made this must-see TV.
