Life changes forever for 14th-century warrior Wilkin Brattle when a messenger implores him to set aside his sword and lead the life of a journeyman executioner. In a time of rebellion and political upheaval, he must walk the line between protecting his identity and serving a mysterious destiny, guided by mystical healer named Annora. In addition to being under Annora's control, he is manipulated by Milus Corbett, a devious Chamberlain with political aspirations. Wilkin must traverse political and emotional pitfalls on his way to understanding his greater purpose -- all while being driven by an increasing romantic connection with Baroness Lady Love Ventris.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Kurt Sutter's The Bastard Executioner doesn't want for dark thrills, but it unfortunately has more enthusiasm for brutality and gore than necessary narrative focus.

Alison Herman Flavorwire A crude, gory spectacle does not a great series make, and The Bastard Executioner displays all the surface marks of an ambitious period piece or genre epic without any of the core traits. Aug 10, 2017 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail Many viewers will find it hard to stomach the violence in The Bastard Executioner. But there is much more to it. Even the mystical qualities have an authenticity to them. Sep 17, 2015 Full Review David Wiegand San Francisco Chronicle The Bastard Executioner not only hits the mark, it sets the bar very high for the rest of the fall season. Rated: 3/4 Sep 17, 2015 Full Review Randy Dankievitch TV Over Mind The Bastard Executioner is loud, brash, and thoroughly empty, telling a story that, despite its setting, feels too familiar to any number of recent, better dramas. Mar 6, 2020 Full Review Kevin Fitzpatrick ScreenCrush The Bastard Executioner still feels like an inescapable slog in its early going. Jun 18, 2018 Full Review Joyce Slaton Common Sense Media Brutally violent Medieval drama is epic, not for kids. Rated: 4/5 Sep 21, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member It'brutal, there are a lot, but a lot of hystorical failure with the cloth, the jewels, the cutlerys, ustensils. And I don't really understand what the show is about...What kind of story the showrunner wants the audience to understand and to show. Sade, because it could have been very interesting to learn more about this periode of time which was dark and very brutal. In the darkest time you can finf some light and even glamour. See the "Witcher".... Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Historical, amazing cast, just awesome & right up my alley. If you like the Vikings, The Last Kingdom, check this out! Written by Son's of Anarchy's Kurt Sutter, stars Katy Segal! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I loved Sons, I am a Kurt Sutter fan but this was just a waste of time and space. The show had a lot of potential and the actors were great working with what they were given. Too much Kurt and the unnecessary role he made for his wife. Utterly ridiculous! What a disappointment! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a little hard to understand some of the characters because of the accent but I LOVE this show! I think the brutality and gore is something of that time period and should be kept. It's no more brutal than things that happen in today's world. The only thing I don't like is Katey Sagal's part. She's just not good at it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member What a shame this show was cancelled as the cast was excellent apart from the wooden Edwin. The pilot although not great did show promise and the remaining episodes were worth watching only being spoilt by the B&W fade outs. Lee Jones was a triumphant as the lead and should go on and do more.A real shame that poor ratings ruined another potentially good show Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Loved it! I couldn't stop watching. I am bummed that there will be no 2nd season. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
