Melanie McFarland Salon.com The Conners is much more like the original Roseanne than the revival in spirit, in that the series interacts with hot button issues like race, class, gender identity and sexual orientation with empathy and realism. Feb 5, 2021 Full Review Lorraine Ali Los Angeles Times "The Conners" can come off as ham-fisted when leveraging topical themes for its family dramedy... This time, though, the situations in ABC's flagship family sitcoms hit especially close to home. Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Verne Gay Newsday TV comedies, especially good ones like "black-ish" and "The Conners," know when they have to "pivot," but especially know when to arrive back at the same place where all sitcoms eventually end up: In the warm, swaddling embrace of family. Rated: 3/4 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Jonathon Wilson Ready Steady Cut This should hopefully provide a pretty rich setup for the rest of the season. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Christine Orlando TV Fanatic The Conner family has always been able to find the humor in struggling to get by, but the stakes have never seemed higher, and it's difficult to laugh at their all-too-real desperation. Rated: 4.3/5 Oct 30, 2020 Full Review Tara Ariano Primetimer Other than Superstore, no scripted show that takes place outside of a hospital is better suited to dramatize the anxiety, uncertainty, and absurdity of the pandemic. kiska This show was better when Roseanne Barr was on it. Not worth watching without her. It's just not the Conners without her. Sara Gilbert made the show so incredibly bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I love this show. Kudos to the cast and crew. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I was a big fan of Roseanne (until the last season where it went off the rails) and was hoping that I would enjoy this sequel. It got off to a slow start, with the actors sometimes struggling to find their footing in the roles again and the writing a little hit and miss, but it has only gotten better with each season. I'm glad that they stood by their 'working class family' roots and that they continue to show the trials that the average family faces. The addition of new characters has really improved the show, as well. The actor that plays Ben is great and of course, Katey Sagal never misses in anything that she does. I was honestly doubtful at first but I can honestly say that I don't miss the matriarch of the family at all and the show is just as good without her. I just finished watching the very satisfying finale and was very happy to read that they have been renewed for another season. I look forward to it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member The funniest spin-off ever, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Really great, I love the humble moral-of-the-story kind of show (long missing from tv), and I know it isn't exactly that, but it is very down to earth and very every day with a modern day tilt. It tries to be about being good or doing the right thing. It isn't just a working class struggle show anymore (I mean Rosanne) and this show has heaps of charm. All the characters are eminently likeable with their distinct traits. My favourite show on tv right now. Makes you smile :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review stephanie l 100% honest, I stopped watching after Rosanne was kicked off and had no interest in the show. Plus I was mad. Rosanne is an insult comic and she was dropped for making an insulting joke even though she apologized for it? What next, are people going to get mad at water for being wet? Oh, wait, they're already mad at hot coffee for being hot! I binge-watched this show after it got to season 3 to see if it was any good and I have to say that I was right. Without Rosanne, the show simply doesn't work. You spend the whole first season waiting for her to show up to give the joke setups their punchline or give her opinion on the family's situations but it never happens, leaving you disappointed. Becky is still horribly irresponsible and you wonder if a baby would even survive in her care. The show also goes from saying illegals taking our jobs are bad in the previous season to saying, oh those poor people are just trying to make a living in this season. Pick a lane and stay in it. By season 2 they try to cement Darlene as the one to take Rosanne's place but her deliveries come off as bored or angry every single time. She keeps making the same mistakes in her love life and career as she did when she was a teenager so you just wait to see her stupidity blow up in her face so the writers can move on to something else. The show tries so hard to be PC that instead of giving the subjects the time they deserve in the episodes, they do it as an obvious and quick insert into the show to appease the whiney snowflakes. Seeing Dan try to move on with Louise is just painful to watch and her character doesn't fit the family dynamic. It's like trying to replace a blue circle with a blue/green square, it may be slightly similar but it still doesn't fit. Harris is an irredeemable brat and you find yourself rooting for her to fail at everything. At the season 3 endpoint, you look back at the show and realize how utterly depressing the whole thing is. Before the Conners, you wondered what will happen next, but here you think 'Oh god what now'? There is so much heavy content with so few comedic moments you stop watching just to make yourself feel better. Oh, and thanks to the writers for making menopause seem like the end of a woman's reason for living. For the love of entertainment, get Rosanne back and retcon this series out of existence! It got so horribly depressing by the last season you'd need an antidepressant just to get through each episode. I'm not sure what's worse, the fact that the show isn't funny or that I only laughed once each season. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
