Synopsis
You probably know their names and work, but you might not know the stories of their personal lives. They're impressionists, artists who worked during the 19th-century art movement that started with a group of Paris painters who faced stiff opposition from the conventional art world. In this series, art writer Waldemar Januszczak explores the back stories and works of four of the movement's most influential painters: Pissarro, Monet, Renoir and Bazille. He explores the social and cultural influences that led them to their style of painting and explains how they challenged and changed the art world forever. To get a complete picture, Januszczak visits the cities and towns where the men lived and from which they drew their inspirations.
