It's the late 1950s and Miriam "Midge" Maisel has everything she has ever wanted -- the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn't previously know she had -- stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the "Tonight Show" couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls").

Eric Deggans NPR It's a wonderful showcase for star Rachel Brosnahan, who snaps off the one-liners (provided by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, of Gilmore Girls fame) as if she were born to play this character. Nov 25, 2019 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) Lots of things make TMMM sing, especially the dialogue. Dec 20, 2018 Full Review Karl Quinn The Age (Australia) The Marvelous Mrs Maisel manages to be both wildly improbable...and utterly plausible. Oct 17, 2018 Full Review Michael Cuby them. [It] turned Brosnahan into a bona fide star while also establishing Amazon Prime as a veritable producer of serious awards contenders. Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Victor Pineyro Seventh Art Studio It is a very special show. Extraordinary music, magnificent acting, like nothing I've ever seen in a comedy series before. Audience Member One of the best, cleverest, wittiest shows I've ever watched. The cast, the acting, the script, the set design, the costumes...what a delight for the senses each and every episode. Love love love this show! Encore! Encore! Encore! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/18/25 Full Review Michael Antony A Mikey's TV Review: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season I-V 2017-2023) *** SPOILERS *** Created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls), the story set between the late 1950s and early 1960s follows the life of a middle-class, Jewish, 30something New York housewife who after her husbands affair, discovers she has a talent for stand-up comedy. After a few false starts, (including an arrest and a chance meeting with real-life controversial comedy legend Lenny Bruce) she becomes even more determined to make it big. But at what cost to those around her? Perhaps nightclub manager Suzie Myerson can coach her and guide her in the right direction… although she brings some baggage of her own! Anyone with a genuine soft spot for Doris Day movies will love how the sets are furnished, while costume designer Donna Zakowska has created some iconic costumes for the show and deservedly won an Emmy for her creations. The camera work too is just as engaging and inventive with many extended single-shot scenes following a characters p.o.v, along with ingenious use of often used locations. None of this would work quite as well without the playful and winning Rachel Brosnahan as the titular character Miriam "Midge" Maisel, and Alex Borstein (the voice of Lois Griffin on Family Guy) as her long suffering but rambunctious manager Susie Myerson. The chemistry between these two actors is pure gold, mined for all its worth. Their repartee fires the show taking both the drama and comedy to occasionally unexpected places. It's a show filled with laugh out loud moments and heartbreaking pathos. Sometimes within the same scene. That isn't to diminish the part played by the outstanding cast - especially Michael Zegen as Joel Maisel (Madge's ex-husband), Marin Hinkle, Tony Shalhoub, Kevin Pollak, Caroline Aaron as Mrs. M's parents and in-laws respectively, Luke Kirby as Lenny Bruce and a hilarious on-going cameo by Jane Lynch as rival comedian Sophie Lennon! As perhaps expected with something so constistantly colourful and enjoyable, like one of show's fabulous frocks all the loose end are neatly packeged, tied together and smartly presented with a bright and beautiful bow. Thankfully there's also a delightful ending to one of the very best series to have aired over the last 6 years. Funny, smart and heartfelt, not unlike Mrs. Maisel herself… Mikey's TV Rating: 5/5* Tits Up! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Don J I really want to like this show. But profanity makes my ears hurt. There is no need for it. And I can't imagine in the time frame that this show takes place that these women would be saying it to the extent of which is being said. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/18/23 Full Review peter S I did not manage to watch to the end of season one. What is this about ? It's about nothing much really. It's an idea that must have come to the producer when watching Seinfeld. And if we had a lady Seinfeld but society does not want a woman as a stand up. Perhaps, but did Seinfeld actually do stand ups in his series ? Why not ? Because it's a bad idea. One does not watch a film that has bits of stand ups here and there. It's very annoying. And yes, perhaps in the old days it would not have been acceptable for a woman to be a stand up. But who cares? I guess, we would not care if it was funny at least. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/06/23 Full Review AaA a My top 1 favourite show. No argument needed, just watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/12/23 Full Review Brenda O This is acting. That's how you direct and script a series. Just Marvelous. Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, you are Marvelous. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/23 Full Review Read all reviews
