It's the late 1950s and Miriam "Midge" Maisel has everything she has ever wanted -- the perfect husband, two kids and an elegant apartment on New York's Upper West Side. Her seemingly idyllic life takes a surprising turn when she discovers a hidden talent she didn't previously know she had -- stand-up comedy. This revelation changes her life forever as she begins a journey that takes her from her comfortable life on the Upper West Side through the cafes and nightclubs of Greenwich Village as she makes her way through the city's comedy industry on a path that could ultimately lead her to a spot on the "Tonight Show" couch. The series was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino ("Gilmore Girls").

What to Know

Critics Consensus

As visually spectacular as ever, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's witty banter flies with comedic fury -- but shallow social commentary and wandering storylines highlight the show's increasingly superficial tendencies.

Noa Azulai Bitch Media The creators of Midge let us down, failing to let her grow as a character by questioning her own privilege and whiteness as she travels through 1960s America. Mar 15, 2021 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) Relish in three seasons of snappy dialogue, beautiful early-'60s period recreation and Midge's odd-couple friendship with her wonderfully gruff manager, Susie (Alex Borstein). Jan 8, 2020 Full Review Jen Chaney New York Magazine/Vulture The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has reached a point where its aesthetic, which definitely revels in the trappings that come with upper-class life, may be more blatantly at odds with the direction in which Midge needs to go in order to grow as a character. Dec 13, 2019 Full Review Victor Pineyro Seventh Art Studio Screwball, stand-up, jazz, civil rights, music, homages. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 3 levels down from the comedy but up on production. Midge Maisel might very well be my favorite female character right now. Esteban C i have to admit that, so far, this is my least favorite season! maybe it was because it wasn’t fully centered in new york, maybe it was because i didn’t really love the shy baldwin storyline or maybe it was because there were a lot of changes, both very enjoyable and both a little unnecessary! anyways, in general terms, it was still and enjoyable season and i loved the vibes, cinematography and character development that it provided, but i’m looking forward to more stability and more of old school NEW YORK in the last two seasons <3 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Roy V The season has slowed a bit but in a good way. I'm left enriched by all the characters. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/06/23 Full Review Mike P Yikes - they lost the recipe. Instead of focus on a funny young woman trying to make it in a mans world it's a series of yammering gag moments that are almost embarrassing. I'll keep trying but I'm feeling sad that a great show has fallen to its knees. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/23 Full Review john g very disappointing after the first two terrifically funny seasons Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member She is so childish in fact the show tries to stay in adolescence it refuses to grow up and mature. I'm happy Benjamin came back to tell her off though she completely deserved that! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Downhill All The Way Having enjoyed the debut season, I disliked the second season and find, to my dismay, the third season even worse. Season One had a good plot, fun of surprise, funny routines and interesting characters. But the subsequent seasons lack a driving plot, the side characters have zero reality, and Mrs. Maisel always somehow makes up routines in front of your eyes - no writers. I don't care about any of the characters anymore, and that's bad. The entire enterprise went from being charming to totally fake, contrived, well made nonsense. Hope Season 4 is better - I will watch in hope, not expectation. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
