Based on the accounts of Marines in World War II, this 10-part miniseries follows the intertwined journeys of three U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theater -- Pfcs. Robert Leckie and Eugene B. Sledge and Sgt. John Basilone -- from their first battle against Japan on Guadalcanal, across the sands of Iwo Jima and the horror of Okinawa, to their ultimately triumphant return after V-J Day. The producing team behind "The Pacific," including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, also was behind HBO's award-winning miniseries "Band of Brothers."

Critics Consensus

An honest, albeit horrifying, exploration of World War II, The Pacific is a visually stunning miniseries not for the faint of heart.

Chuck Barney San Jose Mercury News Bursting with epic sprawl and extravagance. But like any effective film of its kind, it also contains a brand of intimacy that will have you bonding with its characters and caring deeply about their fates. May 25, 2018 Full Review Gerard Gilbert Independent (UK) The soldiers' stories struggle to impose themselves against the relentless pyrotechnics. May 25, 2018 Full Review Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com It is both historical document and something that feels remarkably current. And, most of all, it is amazing, riveting television of a caliber that does not come along too often. You don't want to miss a minute. Interpreters were important in "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band of Brothers," but somehow in "The Pacific," they are totally absent. Rated: 2/5 Jun 21, 2024 Full Review Jorge Loser Espinof ... Ruthless in its anti-war sentiment. Benjamin H With intense battle sequences, a dark tone and some strong thematic explorations, The Pacific is a mostly rewarding miniseries that sadly is depowered by a slightly uneven narrative that also negatively affects the engrossing characterization and defined focus that the likes of Band of Brothers was loaded with. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/24 Full Review Craig M The cinematography was excellent, but it was hard to identify with any of the characters. Boredom interspersed with great action sciences. A half dozen executive producers and another batch of co-executive producers couldn't make a decent series worth watching all the way through. I stopped watching at episode 4. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/23 Full Review Eric H Learned a lot about history Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/23 Full Review Bas W After watching Band of Brothers this series is a major disappointment. The characters barely have any personality and the story is jumping subject in a way that you loose sense where you are at. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/08/23 Full Review Christopher C Gut wrenching, heart breaking, and terrifying all at the same time. The Pacific takes you through the horrors of the Pacific battles that took place during WWII, and it absolutely delivers. You grow to fall in love with many of the characters, and become heart broken when you lose them (HALDANE AKA ACK-ACK HURT MY SOUL). I can't speak to how realistic this is, and I do know there were a few inaccuracies such as the Japanese bonsai charges displayed, but it still works. Is it as good as Band of Brothers? For me, they're on par. BoB was more about personal development and personal struggles. For Pacific, it was about the men around you and how war affected each and every single one of them. Do yourself a favor and watch these 10 episodes more than once as The Pacific is EASILY one of THE best shows you'll ever see. It's right up there with Generation Kill, BoB, and Peaky Blinders. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/05/23 Full Review Tedra U Horrifying to watch, but absolutely riveting. Having personally known a veteran of the 1st Marines and hearing my cousin talk about his experiences as a 17 year old Navy duck boat driver at Iwo Jima, this is hard, but unsparing with great acting (including Rami Malek's incredible Snafu). I've never really liked Band of Brothers, and I think this is far superior, tech-wise and acting wise. The score by Hans Zimmer is haunting, cinematography, everything is top-notch. Spielberg and Hanks created a masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
