Well into the second generation of a grand televangelist tradition, the world-famous Gemstone family is living proof that worship pays dividends in all sizes. Patriarch Eli, the man most responsible for the tremendous success of the family's megachurch, is in mourning over the loss of his wife. Jesse, the eldest of the three grown Gemstone siblings, looks to lead in his father's footsteps, but finds his past sins jeopardizing the family ministry. Next in line comes middle sister Judy, who secretly lives with her fiancé and dreams of escaping the Gemstone compound. Rounding out the dysfunctional trio is pseudo-hipster Kelvin, the youngest of the preachers and a thorn in Jesse's side. As the family battles numerous threats to their renowned religious empire, they continue to spread the good word... and make a solid buck doing so.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Righteous Gemstones has its mixture of broad comedy and genuine pathos down pat, chapter and verse, and it preaches a riotously funny gospel in what might be its darkest installment yet.

Phil Christman The Atlantic Impious as the show is, the way it scrambles cause and effect aptly captures the weird, anti-dramatic quality of forgiveness. Aug 4, 2023 Full Review Matt Schimkowitz AV Club Though we are treading familiar ground, The Righteous Gemstones remains blessed with near-constant laughs from front to back. Rated: B- Jun 20, 2023 Full Review Brian Tallerico The Playlist A season that’s willing to take risks. Rated: B+ Jun 17, 2023 Full Review Bruce R. Miller Sioux City Journal While “Gemstones” doesn’t bite the religious hand quite the way it did in previous seasons, it does conclude without a big sermon. Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Dónal Lynch Sunday Independent (Ireland) In this outing the opulence and hypocrisy reaches new and preposterous heights. Jan 29, 2024 Full Review Melody McCune Geek Girl Authority It’s as hilarious and heartfelt as ever, with a satisfying seasonal arc that ties loose ends while leaving the door open for a potential fourth season. Season 3 is pure, comedic escapism. Aug 24, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

CC C This is the most hilarious, wrong, demented and sometimes heartfelt and dark series out there right now. If you don't enjoy it, there's something wrong with you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/02/25 Full Review Nick C Better than 99% of shows out there. Offers a resolution instead of playing the cliff hangar game at the end of each season Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review A S I really love the acting in this serie. The strange and over the top humor keeps you watching and want to see more. Weird/funny dialogues, weird or funny scenes and sometimes it all goes to far, but still I kept on watching. Well made, well done. Highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Tim R Jeez, try something different. I'm genuinely embarrassed for these actors, writers and creators. Same one dimensional characters doing the same narrative for 15 hours straight, with shock scenes thrown in. Like watching a lame SNL skit episode after episode. I truly believe that the love of this adolescent tantrum is from deep inside the echo chamber. If you showed it to a broad sector of the population, the scores would plummet, unless they were all 12 yo boys Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/25/25 Full Review Better M I love the portrayal of the right-wing militia and the scenes related to it - s funny. I also really enjoy the character of Uncle Baby Billy - one of the best TV show names ever, and Goggins nails it. I’m also high impressed by John Goodman’s acting. I didn’t like the last 2 episodes in which the horribly immoral family is highly rewarded for their misdeeds and terrible attitudes, and the murderous in-law Peter is let off scot-free with zero consequences. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/25 Full Review Gareth v While it might seem dumb, this show continually delivers the laughs. The jokes aren't the most highbrow, but it works with the subject matter of evangalical christianity. Definitely worth checking out. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
