A four-part miniseries tells the horror story of King's "The Stand." A supervirus that leaked from a lab kills most of the population in what appears to be The Plague (Part 1). The survivors share The Dreams (Part 2). Then they fight to stay alive as they break into groups of good and evil in The Betrayal (Part 3). The Stand (Part 4) between good and evil is the final episode.

Critics Consensus

Based on Stephen King's magnum opus of a novel, The Stand delivers six hours of vintage denim, questionable special effects, and an all-star cast battling the forces of good and evil.

David Bianculli New York Daily News It's the most stylish and satisfying TV adaptation of Kings work... "The Stand" will make [Gary] Sinise a star. Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Newsweek Staff Newsweek With the exception of some gnarly corpses and a handful of devilish special effects, there are surprisingly few jolts to be had here. Jan 16, 2020 Full Review Greg Dawson Orlando Sentinel The most terrifying thing about The Stand is its length - eight hours, which seem to fly by in like, oh, 38 hours. In this story about the end of the world, the end doesn't come a minute too soon. Jan 16, 2020 Full Review Hal Boedeker Miami Herald The actors' strong performances... give The Stand some punch. But not enough to provide focus, which is sorely lacking for three of the four episodes of the sprawling miniseries. Jan 28, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Admirable if occasionally hokey epic. Rated: 3/4 Sep 26, 2020 Full Review Malcolm Johnson Hartford Courant Mick Garris' version turns out to be a video film with solid production values, some spooky and gruesome moments and a number of good performances. Daniel J I have a huge soft spot for this series as I watched it so many times during the 90s. There's lots to like: great acting, fantastic characters, interesting premise, compelling action, engaging atmosphere, etc. However, the ending is bit...blah. Still, I enjoy watching it every few years! :) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review CT 8 Sure it’s a bit dated but it’s still one of the better Stephen King adaptations out there. Much better than the remake, no doubt in part because Whoppi Goldberg isn’t in it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review William C One of the best Stephen King adaptations ever next to Misery, Salem's Lot, and Stand By Me!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/14/24 Full Review Georgan G Being a King fan, thought I'd watch this mini-series. It was pretty good as a book, but as usual for King it was too long & had too many characters. I actually enjoyed this version more than the book. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/19/23 Full Review Montgomery M Parts 1 and 2 were good. Part 3 was boring. And part 4 was ok. Kind of over hyped Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/12/23 Full Review J5 This was an excellent miniseries. Not only was it Stephen King's genius mind that created it, but the cast that was chosen were some of the best in the business. The story which revolves around good vs evil was laid out very well, including watching the characters evolve throughout all four episodes. The best example was Larry Underwood. He started out as a somewhat careless, not quite independent musician who turns out to be one of the most responsible and very important leaders. The same applies to the characters on the evil side. This was such a well thought out series about how a virus can wipe out almost everyone, that it was as if Stephen King saw Covid-19 coming. In fact, a remake was made during the pandemic although it cannot compare to the original. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
