Critics Consensus

If not quite as addicting as its source material, The Stranger has a strong cast and enough tension to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

Barry Divola Sydney Morning Herald With revelations dealt out like treats, actors of the quality of Stephen Rea and Jennifer Saunders in the cast, and pacing that is guaranteed to elevate your pulse rate, just try to watch one episode without being sucked in. May 22, 2020 Full Review Matthew Gilbert Boston Globe Mediocre TV + Weird Mysteries - Restaurants x Extra Hours = Addiction. Mar 19, 2020 Full Review Melanie McFarland Salon.com In elevating the emotional stakes to the same level as the conspiracy, Brocklehurst imbues "The Stranger" with a weight that stays with the viewer more effectively than all the other weekend crimetime options parading across TV schedules. Feb 7, 2020 Full Review Diane Pershing Malibu Times Each new discovery leads to more danger and often life-threatening results. Eight episodes, a binge-worthy weekend. Go for it. Feb 21, 2020 Full Review Alberto Carlos Espinof 'The Stranger' is an effective and addictive thriller, but despite its overabundance of elements, it is incredibly meaningless. [Full Review in Spanish] Feb 19, 2020 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk It's the kind of show where you keep saying "this is ridiculous!", but end up watching it all anyway. Michael W Really great story ideas, but it is such a mishmash, so poorly organized, such trashy dialogue, that one can’t take it seriously. I will admit I got sucked in because I wanna know how it ends up, so I tortured myself through watching all eight episodes, but if I were you, don’t start. You’ll just be aggravated by the poor storytelling, lack of believability, poor directing, But good acting. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/11/24 Full Review Thomas A Absolutely wonderful – every night since I started watching this miniseries, I’ve gone to bed an hour or two past my normal time because I just can’t stop watching it. And then fragments of the show wind up in dreams. I am currently on the last episode. I have a very good friends birthday party tonight. I am seriously thinking about skipping it just because I want to watch the show and see how it ends. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review paul a 6 hours of your life that you'll wish you could get back. So much unnecessary stuff going on that adds nothing. Might have been ok if it was wrapped up in 2 episodes. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Jim W They kept you wondering whodunnit, and wove a complex tale. No wonder I couldn't figure it out: they had two completely separate and unrelated plot lines going on. A disappointment that those lines didn't tie in better with each other for an actual thriller. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Denise T Death by a thousand idiots. This thing was just a ton of disparate threads that in the end have little or no relevance to the central missing mother storyline which is why we’re watching. The whole sub plot of the kids and drugs and beheaded alpaca had zero connection to the Corinne situation. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Anastasiia M So many unnecessary characters and plot arcs. So many cliché lines like 'I would do anything for my family.' Such weak motivations behind the actions of nearly everyone in the series. The plot pretends to be dynamic and convoluted, but in fact, it is so slow and predictable. It was so tiresome to watch.
