This supernatural drama, based on the series of novels by L.J. Smith, details the lives of two brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore, who have been living as vampires for centuries. After years of moving from from place-to-place to hide their eternal youth (and bloodthirsty condition), the brothers return to the small Virginia town, Mystic Falls, where their lives as humans ended. Damon is snarky, handsome and charming, with a propensity for evil, while Stefan tries to remain noble -- in part to atone for bad behavior in his past.

Audience Member They really went cheap on the special effects, especially by CW's standards. Whenever a witch used magic, candles would flare up, the wind would pick up, and you could hear whispers in the background, but that was about it. What a let down. At least Smallville made somewhat of an effort with their special effects, but Vampire Diaries really missed the mark. Also got tired of how much it tried to rip off Twilight. It's basically the same plot. A really dumb teenage girl who always gets in everyone's way and constantly gets herself captured despite everyone repeatedly telling her to stay home and let the big boys take care of it. No powers whatsoever yet she always tries to save everybody. Also the twilightesque love triangle gets tiring after a while. Boss battles were a real let down. When the witch faced off against her possesed teacher all there was was wind and garbage being spewed in his face, and lights flickering, and the boss getting knocked back, but that was pretty much it. With the laughable budget that they had to work with they would have been better off just making a play on Broadway. Also so stupid how vampires that had just woken up after being asleep for hundreds of years magically know how to use modern technology such as iphones and magically know how to speak in modern English and a local accent despite being from a different time and magically know how to put together a modern outfit despite being from a time where girls only wore dresses, white gloves, and sunbrellas. This season was an absolute emotional rollercoaster, and they finally got the happy ending that they all deserved. The sirens were threatening, and they took nothing from no one. I couldn't have asked for a better ending and I am saddened that this is the end of the Vampire Diaries.
