Critics Consensus

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a faithful and languid adaptation of John le Carre's celebrated novel, anchored by an inimitable masterclass in subtlety by Alec Guinness.

Toby Manning Guardian Alec Guinness, perfectly cast, might not look so good in a pair of skintight trunks, but Smiley's brains and guile are worth all of Bond's gadgets put together. His dissection of the commie conspiracy is riveting from start to bloody finish. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Sam Jordison Guardian It's the slow-building tension and intrigue that matters. The TV series is a masterclass in pacing and gradual, teasing delivery. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Ben Travers PopMatters Irvin paces his thriller with a deliberate slowness I imagine he hoped would help people keep up with the variety of characters, twists, and turns. It might for some. Rated: 6/10 Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Lynnette Porter PopMatters The BBC's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy may not be as flashy as more recent espionage dramas, but it would be difficult to find a role or performance more substantive than Alec Guinness' George Smiley. Rated: 7/10 Dec 7, 2018 Full Review John Powers NPR's Fresh Air As played by Guinness, a master of the ambiguous smile, Smiley exudes a melancholy kindness that may not be kind, and a knowledge of human frailty that's profound Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Leaburn O It's slow, ponderous, confusing with men talking in Smokey rooms endlessly. However, it's the first time I've ever been able to understand the plot because films tend to rush it. Alex Guinness was s brilliant as always. Watched on a DVD I bought a long time back. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/23 Full Review tom w Like the Smiley's People series, I thoroughly enjoyed Tinker Tailor. The masterful, understated craft of Sir Alec Guiness is a joy to quietly witness. I only wish a re-mastered version would be released with English subtitles. At 78, I am rather hard or hearing and the posh West End public school accent is a challenge for me. I can follow the gist but I miss many of the nuances. Fortunately for me, Sir Alec speaks more clearly than most, perhaps attributable to his early stage career. On stage, one has to be able to 'whisper' to the back row. Two of my other favorites, Helen Mirren & Max von Sydow also had theatrical backgrounds. I find that interesting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review david f Surprisingly faithful to the book, claustrophobic, and bitter, this is a pretty refined adaptation of the John Le Carre novel about a monstrously complex investigation into the possibility of a mole or double agent inside the Circus, Britain's secret intelligence agency. Alec Guinness plays George Smiley, the awkward everyman investigator who was tossed out of the Circus following a disastrous spying mission in Czechoslovakia but now he's nearly the only man trustworthy enough in the government's eyes to investigate the mole when a Soviet agent seemingly discloses the fact of that there is one. There's twists and turns aplenty and suspicion falls on everyone before the thrilling climax in a London safehouse where Smiley closes in on his prey. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Just about the best thing to have been on TV. There is nothing flash, or fast paced about this. Its nail biting, filled full of tension, Alec players the perfect Smiley. You could have an unlimited budget and would not be able to improve on this. You cannot watch this whilst sitting browsing the net on your tablet, you have to sit and pay attention to every minute. I love it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
