What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tokyo Vice's protagonist is its least interesting element, but the intrigue of Japan's underworld and the verisimilitude of its setting make for a seductive slice of neon noir.

Scott Bryan BBC.com I love the fact that you hear the two main characters speaking fluent Japanese throughout the series too. It gives it that level of depth, that extra little bit authenticity and heck, encourages you to put away your phone for a bit. Dec 21, 2022 Full Review Debi Enker The Age (Australia) Like Jake, the series appears enamoured of the country and its customs at the same time as it recognises its flaws, the ingrained brutality, misogyny and prejudices. Rated: 4/5 Dec 3, 2022 Full Review Hugo Rifkind Times (UK) One of the most unexpected strengths of this show is how well it portrays male friendship, with something oddly sweet sometimes bubbling up between Adelstein and Sata, two young men rising up in very different professions. Nov 29, 2022 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies Michael Mann brings together crime and column inches in Tokyo Vice. May 20, 2023 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse “Tokyo Vice”’s story may go a bit too far in some of its arcs, but as a whole, emerges as an impressive series that also manages to highlight a number of aspects of living in Japan, particularly for foreigners, in the best fashion. Rated: 7 Jan 2, 2023 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk Tokyo Vice becomes more absorbing the deeper into it you go, though a fair amount of disbelief needs to be suspended. Geoff G Absolutely loved this series. Fantastic characters , great script - incredibly authentic sympathetic feel for Japanese culture and customs set in the 1990s. You actually feel for all the characters throughout the series which is always a sign that you are emotionally invested. The Japanese characters were terrific - particularly the experienced incorruptible detective Katagari, young Sato who fell into a life of crime and is besotted by Samantha (an American trying to make her way in Japan) and the ruthless crime boss Tozawa. Wonderful engrossing series. Highly recommended. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Steve C A noir genre set in Tokyo. If expect it to contain X it will contain X.
