Small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read the minds of those around her. She doesn't exactly help her reputation, though, when she falls for Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who has "come out of the coffin" along with many of his undead comrades now that a new synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren't wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie's boss, Sam Merlotte, who carries a torch for her. "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball is behind this series adaptation of best-selling novels by Charlaine Harris.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's unabashedly soapy and it occasionally wavers in its social commentary, but True Blood is a gory, sexy genre romp with a strong supporting cast.

Thomas Sutcliffe Independent (UK) So far, True Blood isn't deep, it doesn't have the undertow of mortality and loss that made Ball's previous hit, Six Feet Under... But its take on contemporary gothic does have a knowing connection to a dark side of American life. Jun 22, 2018 Full Review William Thomas Empire Magazine Those who enjoy a guilty pleasure of an evening, however, will likely find this a fun if over-cooked ride, a juju-laced, borderline-bonkers slab of Southern Gothic that delights in its pulpiness. Rated: 3/5 Oct 24, 2017 Full Review Barry Garron The Hollywood Reporter True Blood, with its constant profanity, gore and banal cruelty, will have a limited appeal. It might become appointment viewing for genre fans even as the rest of us steer clear of Bon Temps. Sep 7, 2008 Full Review Carla Monfort Espinof Uninhibited, bloody, and eager to stick a finger on the wound of taboo topics. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 2, 2023 Full Review Eric Diaz Nerdist Part of the appeal of True Blood, especially in its first few seasons, was its over-the-top shock value, often bloody and sexual in nature. Sep 6, 2018 Full Review Kevin Carr 7M Pictures After dealing with all the hype and hubbub that came through the media with last year's soft vampire love story Twilight, it's nice to see a show that actually has some teeth to it. Rowan C True Blood takes place in southern Louisiana in a little town called Bon Temps and this was a great introduction season. I got to know all of the characters very well and there were a lot of surprises that this season gave everybody. Sookie Stackhouse who is played by Anna Paquin is one of the main characters and she has telepathic powers which leads her to meet a vampire named Bill Compton who is played by Stephen Moyer. Murders were happening all over this town and it was one hell of an investigation to find the person responsible. Jason Stackhouse who is played by Ryan Kwanten seems to find himself in a lot of trouble because was associated with mostly every murder that happened this season. The true killer Rene Lanier or Drew Marshall who is played by Michael Raymond-James was very good at this stuff because I never suspected for one second that it would be him. He gets killed in the end by Sookie with the help of another character Sam Merlotte who is played by Sam Trammell because it was found that he was actually a shapeshifter. There was a lot of character development with just one season and huge example of this was Tara Thornton who is played by Rutina Wesley. In the beginning of this season, she was very mean and she found a sense of living by the end of season 1. She meets a woman named Maryann Forrester who is played by Michelle Forbes and it seemed like Sam knew her very well. By the end of the season, Sam was seen stuffing a bunch of money in a bag looking like he was leaving. We also got to meet the oldest vampire in the show so far Eric who is played by Alexander Skarsgard. Eric is over a thousand years old and he is shown as a very threatening vampire. He has Bill in his pocket because he is the boss of Bill and I cannot wait to see more of him next season. I think the cast is great and I have liked every single character that played a part in season 1. Overall, a very good introduction season and I am very excited to see what these next seasons bring to the table. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/27/24 Full Review Lucifago D The only vampire series that revolves around two vampires in love with a ‘human,’ showing gore and other intriguing elements. It provides an opportunity for any character to tell their story, rather than solely focusing on the protagonists. I watched it when it was first released, and I’m rewatching it in 2024. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/16/24 Full Review Mike P HBOs excellent version of Charlaine Harris' popular vampire soap opera novel-series... The Sookie Stackhouse Stories...Developed by Allan Ball, the Academy Award Winning Writer/Producer behind Six Feet Under and American Beauty....And this is a hugely popular, critically acclaimed series which ran for most of the aughts and the teens; from 2008-to 2015. Its kind of an Intermezzo between Twilight and Anne Rice...And its also kind of an updated Dark Shadows Series; focusing primarily on the troubled but passionate relationship between Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton; and she's a young psychic, and he's a handsome vampire, (played by real life husband and wife team Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer)...And it's a southern Gothic melodrama and thriller all about Ben Temps Louisiana; which seems like a sub-in for New Orleans, and it's a Peyton's Place type tapestry of otherworldly creatures living in this town; with vampires, wherewolves, witches, Satanists, paganists, fairies and shapeshifters; and all of them vying for dominance; ...The tone is half Anne Rice; half Tennessee Williams...and all of it is very sexy...And Harris is great at generating suspense and intrigue; and also muddying up the waters and throwing in complex moral quandaries that challenge and intrigue us. (The pendulum keeps swinging back and forth, back and forth on who we're rooting for and how we feel all about this stuff). As stated before this was a huge hit for HBO and won many Emmys, and it still has a very rabid fan base. Overall: Highly Recommended. Trust me, this will be love at first bite!.... 💀 🩸 🌙 🪐 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review LA F If you like fantasy, this is a great binge worthy series. Many of the characters are the same as in the books, but the plot is very different. There is a lot of gore and sex but they do not detract from the series. As stated in the critics reviews: the series does not solve world hunger or climate warming; but if that is not what I was expecting when i went to watch this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Liz D Love, love, love. Almost as much as the books which I recommend you read first. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Victor hugo F I loved this vampire series and it's much better than The Vampire Diaries, much better rating 10/ Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews
