Small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read the minds of those around her. She doesn't exactly help her reputation, though, when she falls for Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who has "come out of the coffin" along with many of his undead comrades now that a new synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren't wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie's boss, Sam Merlotte, who carries a torch for her. "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball is behind this series adaptation of best-selling novels by Charlaine Harris.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

True Blood's second season is still mostly content with delivering pulpy escapism. but it's well acted, addictive, and packs a stronger and more focused punch than the first.

Verne Gay Newsday Silly, gross, soapy, mysterious, intriguing, exotic, erotic True Blood is fun. Even more fun this season. Jun 23, 2018 Full Review James Poniewozik TIME Magazine I'd have an easier time taking True Blood less seriously if it could make up its mind as to how seriously it wants to be taken. Jun 14, 2009 Full Review Heather Havrilesky Salon.com "True Blood" is a little less cartoonish and over-the-top than it sometimes seems. Or maybe we're too overwhelmed or distracted or disenchanted to recognize the true nature of this cartoonish, over-the-top, morally mixed-up world we're living in. Jun 14, 2009 Full Review Adam Sweeting The Arts Desk Search me, but True Blood brings style, brio and some fiendish frissons to the old blood-sucker clichés. Jul 18, 2018 Full Review Sarah Carlson Pajiba The Season Two premiere, though, and previews of the season to come provide hope that Ball has found his stride and that, hopefully, it can stand on its own and not as part of the latest vampire cultural craze. Jun 15, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette True Blood will never be confused with the high-quality projects HBO has staked its reputation and brand on, but it can be an entertaining pop/pulp thriller with a fair amount of comedy sprinkled in. Fernando C Season 2 has a drawn out concept that should have been dealt with in ONE episode. The maenade storyline starts to become SUPER ANNOYING after just a couple of episodes, so FAST FORWARD to the last episode. Even there you can easily skip the lame aftermath after the lame 'climax'. Or... jump over season 2 in its entirety, that would be ideal. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/25 Full Review Monique G This was just the show for me, I really loved this show and I didn’t mind the soupy elements, coz it had enough interesting characters (Eric, Tara, Snooki) and enough gore. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Rowan C Season 2 was action packed and very entertaining. I loved all of the characters and we were introduced to the all powerful Godric. Mary Ann was the main villain in this season and she gave everybody a run for their money. She forced the worst out of everybody besides the supernaturals in town and she almost got away with her plan. The Fellowship of the Sun had Goodrich captured and Eric was doing everything that he could to save Godric. Godric ended up killing himself because he was a very peaceful 2,000 year old vampire and he thought that he lived long enough. Mary Ann was a problem from the very beginning and her target was always Sam Merlotte. Sam is a shapeshifter and Bill had the idea that would soon kill Mary Ann at the end of the season. Sam made a choice and Eggs stabbed him which almost killed Sam. Bill healed Sam and Sam was able to change into a bull to kill off Mary Ann. Mary Ann thought that Sam was her all powerful god husband. Toward the end, Bill proposed to Sookie and she had to take some time to think about it. When Sookie was in the bathroom, Bill was chocked with silver and taken. At the end, Sookie came out to say yes only to find that Bill had left. Overall, a great season with some great action and even better characters. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Liz D Oh Jessica you did make things interesting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Brady B I love the entire True Blood series. It was some of the best TV I've seen to date! I would watch it again and recommend to any lover of the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Raakhee N Ghosh! I haven't watched anything as bad as this series and I love vampire stories. I mean if I hate Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse takes the winning podium! Such a selfish, sick character. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
