Small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read the minds of those around her. She doesn't exactly help her reputation, though, when she falls for Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who has "come out of the coffin" along with many of his undead comrades now that a new synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren't wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie's boss, Sam Merlotte, who carries a torch for her. "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball is behind this series adaptation of best-selling novels by Charlaine Harris.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Its sheen may have worn off a bit, but True Blood's fifth season piles on the kooky storylines while maintaining its cheeky brand of Southern Gothic drama.

Ken Tucker Entertainment Weekly Swift and streamlined, lean and mean, the fifth season of True Blood has commenced with gratifying energy. Rated: B+ Feb 6, 2018 Full Review Misha Davenport Chicago Sun-Times While politics come into play later, it is human emotions such as grief, regret and loss that fans can look forward to sinking their teeth into at the start of the season. Rated: 3/4 Jun 10, 2012 Full Review Brian Lowry Variety While the show has always been something of a guilty pleasure, the first four episodes suggest a welcome return to pleasure far outweighing guilt. Jun 10, 2012 Full Review Bill Chambers Film Freak Central Series-salvaging cliffhanger? Hard to say, but if "True Blood" keeps going like this, they're gonna need a bigger boat. Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Charles Webb MTV True Blood has recaptured some of the magic that makes its sex-crazed, moss-covered take on the vampire myth so compelling. Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Christian Law We Got This Covered Even though season 5 wasn't the strongest or most enjoyable of the pack, it feels great to say that the finale easily lives up to those that came before it, delivering the expected cliffhanger that will keep fans drooling for season 6 Rated: 7.5/10 Sep 26, 2013 Full Review Read all reviews

Rowan C Season 5 is one of my favorite seasons so far and I really enjoyed every part of it. Tara is now a vampire and she never forgave the people that made her this way but she managed being a vampire pretty well. Pam and Tara actually end up becoming pretty close because Tara kissed Pam when she came to save her from the authority. Hoyt Fortenberry left to go work in Alaska, and he asked Jessica to remove all memory of Jason and her from his memory so that he can sleep at night. Alcide became Pack Master and it feels like he finally found his purpose as a wolf. Luna who is played by Janina Gavankar is Sam Merlottes' girlfriend and her little daughter Emma who is played by Chloe Noelle Schweikert was kidnapped by Steve Newlin who is played by Michael McMillian. Emma gets rescued at the end of this season and they are all reunited at the end. In this season, we met the authority and they were run with honor by the guardian Roman Zimojic who is played by Christopher Meloni. Russell Edgington was also dug up from his concrete prison and he took many days to get better, only to get arrested by the authority. Eric and Bill were also there as prisoners in which they were released from their execution because they brought back Russell Edgington alive. The authority praised a god named Lilith who is played by Jessica Clark and she is the oldest vampire at 8,000 years old. Once Russell killed Roman, he basically ran the authority and their main goal now was to get rid of mainstreaming by blowing up the biggest True Blood factories in the world. Russell became too obsessed and he decided to go after the fairies in which Eric finally killed him right before Russell was about to kill the fairies. The authority was all about drinking her blood, and Lilith came to all of them saying that they were chosen by her to lead the authority. Bill ends up outplaying all of the members, killing some of them to finally be able to drink the rest of Lilliths' blood. When Bill drank her blood, he exploded but then he reappeared covered in blood looking more dangerous than ever. The episode ends with him looking at Sookie and Eric right before he shows them his fangs, and Eric yelled at Sookie to run. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Liz D Wait what now there are faeries? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Brady B I love the entire True Blood series. It was some of the best TV I've seen to date! I would watch it again and recommend to any lover of the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Raakhee N Ghosh! I haven't watched anything as bad as this series and I love vampire stories. I mean if I hate Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse takes the winning podium! Such a selfish, sick character. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A seven season supernatural ride in the American landscape, delivered by an awesome cast & crew!! Truly imaginative storyline that takes the Vampire franchise in a new direction- a must see for fans of the genre!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Vampire council was in trouble with some siding with the traditional belief of humans being inferior to vampires and vampires wanting to get along with humans. Power struggle ensures and it was up to Sookie and her friends to save the day. Season 5 kinda regressed into the cliche story of the vampire struggle, there were plenty of jokes but again, stupid subplots were involved to ruin the experience.
