Small-town Louisiana waitress Sookie Stackhouse already is viewed as an oddball by her friends and neighbors, since she can read the minds of those around her. She doesn't exactly help her reputation, though, when she falls for Bill Compton, a 173-year-old vampire who has "come out of the coffin" along with many of his undead comrades now that a new synthetic blood has made it possible for vampires to survive without preying on humans. Still, the conservative locals aren't wild about mortal-vampire liaisons, especially Sookie's boss, Sam Merlotte, who carries a torch for her. "Six Feet Under" creator Alan Ball is behind this series adaptation of best-selling novels by Charlaine Harris.

Critics Consensus

Despite the promise of an appropriately shocking series finale, True Blood is mostly content to limp along on familiar plot points.

Carrie Raisler AV Club This is a show so stuck in a quagmire of nonsense that it introduced a ridiculous six-month time jump in last season's finale to get out of the nonsense -- and yet when the show picks up here, it becomes clear it is still stuck in a quagmire of nonsense. Rated: C- Jun 26, 2014 Full Review Richard Larson Slant Magazine In its final season, the series seems to have exhausted its stores of surprises. Rated: 2/4 Jun 21, 2014 Full Review Neal Justin Minneapolis Star Tribune Someone should have put a stake in this show years ago. Jun 20, 2014 Full Review Kayleigh Donaldson Pajiba True Blood probably can't be described as a total success but surely we can celebrate its manic energy and refusal to accept the grimness of realism. Nov 5, 2021 Full Review Jessica Johnson Time Out Chicago If there's any show that should go out with a bang it should be this one. Right now its looking like its going to be all whimper. Rowan C The final season of this show was not bad, but I wish it would have been so much better than it was. Hepatitis V is still spreading and Pam discovers that Eric has obtained the virus. Tara was killed off camera which I did not like because there was no emotion that came with her death. With everything going on, people are in a frantic state of mind and the people on Bon Temps decide to go on a riot. Hoyts' mother ends up getting killed by Jasons' girlfriend Violet who is played by Karolina Wydra and this ends up bringing Hoyt back to Bon Temps. Violet soon snapped once Jason decided he did not want to be with her and she kidnapped Andys' daughter which led her to be killed by Hoyt. Hoyt ended up breaking up with his girlfriend because Jessica decided to tell them that they had a past together. It was actually found that Sarah Newlin took an antidote for the virus, and eventually people found out that she is the cure. The Yakonomo Corporation were the villain organization in this season and they made a deal with Eric to create a business named New Blood. Eventually, Eric betrayed the Yakonomo Corporation and took Sarah Newlin for himself which eventually led him to create a multi-billion dollar company. Bill discovered that he was infected with the virus and it was spreading faster than usual because Sookie is a Faye. Bill had the cure right in front of him but he chose not to because as long as he is alive, Sookie can't have the life that she truly wants. Bills' last wishes were completed with Hoyt and Jessica getting married, and Sookie being the one to drive the stake into his heart. At the end of the season, there was a huge time jump which included a lot of different things. Eric and Pam now own New Blood which made billions of dollars, Jason has the family he always dreamed of with Bridget who is played by Ashley Hinshaw, Sam had his family of two with Nicole who is played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Arlene is in a relationship with Keith who is played by Riley Smith and Sookie is pregnant with her husband who was not shown in the show. The show ends with all of them having Thanksgiving and this was a good ending in my opinion that had the perfect amount of happiness to it. Overall, the show had a great way of how vampires would be if they existed and the cast was just absolutely phenomenal. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Patrick C Watched it three times. I love the show. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Brady B I love the entire True Blood series. It was some of the best TV I've seen to date! I would watch it again and recommend to any lover of the genre. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/25/23 Full Review Raakhee N Ghosh! I haven't watched anything as bad as this series and I love vampire stories. I mean if I hate Elena Gilbert from The Vampire Diaries, Sookie Stackhouse takes the winning podium! Such a selfish, sick character. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member The show was good but the finale was so sweet that all my teeth fell out...
