Suburban housewife and mom Tara Gregson sometimes just doesn't seem like herself, and with good reason: She's living with dissociative identity disorder, a condition that causes her to shift between multiple identities without warning. Her loving husband, Max, copes with the situation as best he can, but neither he nor their teenage kids, Kate and Marshall, can be sure who will greet them when they come home: Tara herself, or "T," a flirty teenager; Buck, a beer-swilling Vietnam vet with a violent streak; Alice, a perfect TV mom right out of the 1950s; or other alter egos in this dark comedy created and written by Academy Award winner Diablo Cody ("Juno").

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Toni Collette continues to unite the diverging tones of Tara with a powerhouse performance that smooths over the series' overabundance of quirk.

Alan Sepinwall HitFix The more the Gregson marriage spirals out of control, the more interesting this season has become. I may not like the person Tara is right now, but she's not boring. Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Brian Tallerico HollywoodChicago.com Toni Collette does such spectacular work on United States of Tara that her performance alone demands you tune in. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Emily St. James AV Club All of the characters feel looser and more lived in, and the series is playing up the comedy in its characters without undercutting the inherent drama at the show's core. Rated: A- Dec 7, 2018 Full Review Seth Freilich Pajiba The writers also manage to mine some humor out of the other story arcs because if they can at least keep me chuckling, coupled with Collette's performance, I'm willing to stick around despite not being pulled in by the storylines as much as I'd like. Jun 19, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The show feels like it's grasping to keep the drama of Tara's situation at a suitably heightened level while other character story arcs feel more believable. Audience Member It's great but a bit slow. Once it get the plot that has been build up, it gets better and better. Worth it! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a horribly written show. Sadly Toni Collete's acting was wasted by portraying this ridiculous character. I'm in no way homophobic nor do I dislike liberals, but this show openly bashed conservative points of views and the sexual talk was bordering on disgusting. I don't believe in DID, and honestly think the condition is an extreme form of borderline personality disorder. The show is unrealistic having us believe that this family would be able to live a normal life with an extremely deranged mother who needs to be admitted for a long term stay at a psychiatric hospital. The dialogue and plot are unbelievable and it should have been pulled from Showtime after the first season. Don't waste 45 minutes of your life watching this show. Mental illnesses are not " cute and funny" like Diablo Cody seems to push through this horribly written garbage of a show. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Disappointing, considering how much I loved season 1, however, despite its more quirky/bizarre nature, season 2 has a lot to offer. Diablo Cody didn't write as many of the episodes and its easy to tell, but even so season 2 of US of Tara is a lot better than your average comedy.
